Comments:

Swim was fun. This was my first Half Ironman and I was preparing for Ironman Arizona. The goal was to see how my body was going to cope with this. There was no taper at all for this race, so I didn't really know what to expect.
What would you do differently?:

I could have swum harder, but it would have gained me a minute or two, which might have made it a lot less pleasant than what it was.
Transition 1
  • 04m 50s
Comments:

It's kind of a long run up to T1, with a few stones giving your feet a good beating.
Bike
  • 3h 35m 23s
  • 56 miles
  • 15.60 mile/hr
Comments:

Hydration and nutrition was good. Kept heart rate down as much as possible.
Transition 2
  • 03m 21s
What would you do differently?:

this time I'll have a wet towel to wipe my face off!
Run
  • 2h 24m 43s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 11m 03s  min/mile
Comments:

I ran with a camelback and am VERY thankfull I did. The waterpoints were not so well stocked, but better than the year before. I would NOT recommend doing this race without any form of backup water that you carry on you, unless you're really well aclimitized.
Other than that, the first part was really hard. It was the first time I had done this kind of distance and I learned a lot
What would you do differently?:

Start slowly, then taper.
Post race
Warm down:

sat in the ice truck. Great.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Experience.

Event comments:

It's hard to rate this race. For organization it should probably get a 2. In 2008 they started packing up the finish line, while there were a LOT of half distance people still out there. It was really sad to see them come in, no finish banner, bikes already on the ground, transition areas packed up....BUT it's because this race is so hard, that we keep coming back. This year we still hade a finish banner to run under, so maybe they realized how the athletes felt.
