Overall Rank = 390/625
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 48/76
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 3:30am, made coffee, final check of bag then 1hr drive to Quassy. Ate bagel with PB plus some pretzels on the way. Arrived just before 5am - early as usual. Rock-star parking! Hit the bathroom about 4 times thru-out setting up. Drank my G1. Admired the awesome bikes. Checked out the pro's. Chatted with Dave C.
Event warmup:

Swam out to first buoy and back, then waited on the beach for EVERYONE else to go. Dont understand why 45-49 was last wave.
Swim
  • 33m 42s
  • 2112 meters
  • 01m 36s / 100 meters
Comments:

Good but not great - happy with my breathing - have had trouble in the past getting in a rhythm. I felt like I was off course most of the time - had some trouble siting the bouys. Regardless, I beat last years time by about 2 minutes, so generally pleased with my swim.
What would you do differently?:

Better navigation.
Transition 1
  • 02m 35s
Comments:

A good T1 for me - better than last year by 30 seconds. I had a no-show in the spot next to me, so some extra space helped.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 3h 24m
  • 56 miles
  • 16.47 mile/hr
Comments:

As usual, I was much slower than the pack - lost 263 places between the swim and bike!! Pathetic. I was determined to not burn out for the run, so I was not pushing as much, but I still should be able to do better on this. I dont train enough on long distances.
What would you do differently?:

More long training rides.
Transition 2
  • 02m 46s
Comments:

Slower than last year by 11 seconds, but Ok in general. Did not use speed laces on my new shoes and had to re-tie both of them. ALso changed socks.
What would you do differently?:

Get a pair of speed laces that I am comfortable with.
Run
  • 1h 56m 56s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 08m 56s  min/mile
Comments:

Last year, this run killed me - I walked alot and ran 2:15:29. I was determined to run the whole thing and did - very psyched about this accomplishment. I felt good and kept a good pace throughout. The final hill was painful, but I kept going and finished with a sprint into the chute - every extra push helped keep me under my overall 6hr goal, so I am very happy with this run.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

Drank some vanilla Muscle Milk - first time - didnt really like it. Wandered the area in search of familiar faces but didnt know anyone. Acknowledged a few people that I paced with, but they all had friends or family. Found some shade and hung out - not really hungry. Found Dave C eventually and compared experiences. Packed up and went home to have a few cold beers.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Biking - need to adjust my training for long races.

Event comments:

This was a first class event. Happy to be a part of it. Volunteers were great - I had a guy at a bike water stop chase me to get me a Gatorade!! Traffic was controlled. Lots of water during the run. I will do this again next year and try to improve, but I am so happy to have broken 6hrs - even by 2/10ths of a second!! Very happy with the race this year.
