Pre-race routine:

Got up at 5:00am, had a egg mcmuffin, banana and protein bar. Packed everything up the night before so I headed out to the race site by 5:30am. Pretty low key although it was absolutely freezing outside...cold & wet!!
Event warmup:

Set up my transition area as quickly as I could to get out of the cold...stripped down to my tri-suit and headed inside for the wait. I sat around and stretched for a little while, rode on a stationary bike for about 20 minutes, jumped in the warm up pool and swam 100 yds. then rode on the stationary for another 10 minutes to stay warm. All during this time going to the bathroom at least a zillion times!

Comments:

Pretty easy swim today. The laps in the pool are really paying off. Started off great....passed two people who I'm assuming ranked therselves a little high! Luckily passing was easy with the wide open lanes. Felt really comfortable. Breathing fell apart a little by the last 2 laps, but held it together for a solid swim....for me!
What would you do differently?:

Continue to work on my pacing...I tend to start out of the gate super fast and then slow down towards the end. Get over the paranoia of someone passing me...if they can...go for it. I'm swimming my own race!
Transition 1
  • 03m 44s
Comments:

Seeing as this was my first cold weather triathlon, I was pretty shocked when I ran out of the pool area into 40 degree weather. I tried to dry off as much as I could, but I lost alot of time in transition trying to get my arm warmers and knee warmers on over my wet skin. Plus our area was a little crowded so I had to sit on a curb close by just to get everything on. Bad transition....but it is hard to get dressed when you are shivering from the cold!
What would you do differently?:

Body Glide...I have the stuff but have yet to use it!
Bike

Comments:

This was a complete disaster! My fingers started to turn white due to the extreme cold. I couldn't stay in the aero position because I couldn't feel my legs! My feet were numb and I couldn't drink anything because I was absolutely feezing. On top of that my knee warmers kept sliding down my legs so I had to yank them up with numb fingers every mile or so. I was ready to get the hell of the bike and move on!!!
What would you do differently?:

Bike in warmer weather? I really think the weather hindered my ability to get aggressive on the course with the slick roads. It is what it is, but I definately need to get more road time in....
Transition 2
  • 02m 16s
Comments:

Pretty easy transition here since I already had my running shoes on. Spent alot of time tyring to adjust my knee warmers so they would stay up when I ran. Grabbed my race number and off i went...with numb toes and all!
What would you do differently?:

Ditch the knee warmers!
Run
  • 28m 39s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 13s  min/mile
Comments:

Not my best run...I had hoped to break 8:30/mile, but it took about a mile and a half before I could literally feel my feet. Once I got into a groove, the side cramps started to kick in. Toughed it out and finished stronger than I expected. I will break 8:30 this year!!!
What would you do differently?:

More fluids on the bike...this kills me every time!
Post race
Warm down:

No warm-down here....ate some food and tried to stay as warm as I could. Quickly got back to transition area and got some warm clothes on! Drank some chocolate milk and packed everything up!!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I think the cold weather killed me....I'm interested to see how this race will go next month...same course....250 additional yards in the pool!

Event comments:

Good race...nice complex and Set-Up does a nice job on their races. I was really happy with the HOT red beans and rice each competitor got at the end of the race...that hit the spot!!!

Course: Due to the rain, they changed this loop into a multi-loop course on pavement. No big deal as there were alot of volunteers there to help steer you int he right direction. Nice hill at the beginning of the first and second loop, but nothing too bad. The rest of the course was pretty flat!
