Pre-race routine:

2 pop tarts, water about 1.5 hrs before, GU 15 mins before. GI issues this morning, bah.

Zoot Ultra shorts, thermal tights, underarmor shirt, race long sleeve over top, snowboard mitts and light run touque.
Event warmup:

Got there at 7:45, parked and spent too much time deciding on clothing. Ended up getting to the big start crowd after gun had gone off, so seeded wayyyyy at the back.

Run

  • 21.1 kms
  • 04m 40s  min/km
Comments:

Started at least 750 places back, so first 3-4 km was just pass pass pass. Lots of zigging to find space, and the snow was so soft and sliding out from under foot. Pace was down about 20sec/km.

My shoes have great grip so I only skittered on the ice patches once, but saw a lot of other people slipping and sliding on the shaded pathways. I slowed down for icy patches as not worth injury for a C race.

I love the crowd at the top of the happy hill with the bagpipes etc - it's crazy!

What would you do differently?:

Get to the line 5-10 mins before start.

Post race
Warm down:

Walking around, stretching etc. Waited around for over an hour for the draws/prizes and bought some previous year tech shirts for 2 bucks each!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Meh, been a snowy winter so not as much long runs as I'd have done previously. But I've been consistant all year.

Time was 3 mins slower than last year which is about what the winner and other prev racers did. 8 mins slower than PR, which is fine. Moved up 30-40 places OA and 8 places in AG so definately not getting slower which is what it feels like sometimes...

Event comments:

Good yearly race with a consistant field and course.

Almost certain to crush it next year. :P

Performance: Average
Course: Garmin pegged it 21.6 for me, so a lot of back and forths passing, finding terrain. First and last 3-4K were snow covered with slippery snow that slid back on each foot stroke - hard to put down power. N/NE pathways were pretty clear so that helped and the flooded sections were low enough I didn't get soaked. West side was bad, all single file, single track on packed snow.
