Pre-race routine:

lights out at 10:15, not my best pre-race sleep, but not my worst. Up at 4am. Breakfast of Cheerios, yogurt, and coffee. Drive to site at 5am. I was first into TA, but didn't know where in and out were, so I racked first at the wrong end, and then missed having the end spot at the good end.

While setting up transition they announced that the swim was cancelled, got new race info: 5k run first, then the bike, then a dash to a finish line. So, the wetsuit stayed in my bag, and I started with my running shoes on. Stayed warm in my rain coat and tights while we waited for the run to start
Event warmup:

stripped to trisuit, did a little running, jumping, running in place.
Run
  • 26m 38s
  • 3.13 miles
  • 08m 31s  min/mile
Comments:

I'm used to trying to leave it all out on the run; knowing I had to save it up for the bike made it hard to figure out what pace to aim for. started off too fast and then settled in around 8:30MM. Set a 5k PR
Transition 1
  • 01m 58s
Comments:

ran past my rack and then fumbled with the aero helmet

3/10 AG
What would you do differently?:

didn't know where run in and bike out were before they closed TA, so didn't get the chance to walk it through.
Bike
  • 48m 13s
  • 14.64 miles
  • 18.22 mile/hr
Comments:

the winds were brutal: the official info was NNE wind 11 mph with gusts to 24 mph, but I think the base wind was even stronger; head/cross out, tail/cross back. The wind would come as a cross blast between the buildings and literally blow you over and knock you off your line, then you get hit from the other side, all the time into a headwind out. This was hard enough with my narrow Zipp 303 rims, but it would have been totally insane if I hadn't taken off the rear wheel cover! Glad I kept it upright the whole way!

The first part parallel to the beach was grueling with the wind; it got better as we angled away from the shore. Once we turned around and generally had the wind to our back quarter the pace really picked up.
What would you do differently?:

wish I could have pushed it harder and averaged at least 19mph, but I think this was about the best I could do under these conditions
Transition 2
  • 00m 30s
Comments:

left the shoes on the bike, racked the bike, dropped the helmet and ran for the finish line with all I had left, barefoot!
Run
  • 00m 26s
  • 0.06 miles
  • 07m 13s  min/mile
Comments:

dash from TA to finish mat; ran for all I had left...barefoot!
Post race
Warm down:

found my spouse, put my tights and jacket back on. packed up transition as soon as they allowed us back in

What limited your ability to perform faster:

brutal wind! not knowing how much to push on the run

Event comments:

cancelling the swim was the only choice, a very good choice. After that, they did pretty well with getting out the new info and got everything going exactly on schedule. Unfortunately, afterwards things weren't so good; couldn't find out when awards would be and left without knowing I placed
