Pre-race routine:

Cereal for breakfast ~3 hours before race. Ate PB&J in the car and was done about 2 hours before. Sipped Accelerade in the transition area.
Event warmup:

Some dynamic stretching and a few strokes in the lake.
Swim
  • 10m 39s
  • 560 yards
  • 01m 54s / 100 yards
Comments:

Started bi-lateral breathing but quickly gave that up for every 2 strokes. That seemed to work much better and also helped with sighting.
What would you do differently?:

Breathe under the cold water before the race start to get my body ready.
Transition 1
  • 02m 8s
Comments:

Transition was fine but my HR was so high coming out of the swim that I felt slightly light headed when I bent over. I think I then took in too many fluids too early and they sat heavily in my stomach. It was still a decent transition time.
What would you do differently?:

If my HR is so high again, take some extra seconds just to get my breathing back under control. It really killed my bike section.
Bike
  • 37m 8s
  • 10 miles
  • 16.16 mile/hr
Comments:

Poor bike ride compared to my training but the swim entirely wrecked me for this section.
What would you do differently?:

Push harder in this section and don't discover a small crack in the frame while setting up transition area. Because of the crack I didn't push as hard on the downhill or bumpy sections. I definitely could have gone harder in this section if I didn't care so much about my escalating heart rate.
Transition 2
  • 01m 41s
Comments:

Decent transition but a little slow. Had to undo bike shoes and tie running shoes.
What would you do differently?:

A little more speed but nothing major.
Run
  • 29m 44s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 35s  min/mile
Comments:

For me this was a great run after I have spent very little time running outside and a terrible bike ride. I was very happy with this time but I also know there is a lot of room to improve. I didn't stop running once which was great for me. I finished at the same pace and I know I could have pushed harder the last mile. It felt like I could have done that entire run again.
What would you do differently?:

Train some more on the run and do more interval work to get my speed up. Learn how hard I can push myself in the run.
Post race
Warm down:

Drank left over accelerade, stretching, and a banana.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Bad swim (cold temps) put my HR through the roof which killed my bike section. More hill training on the bike.

Event comments:

Happy with my first tri and there are a lot of areas I can improve on for the future. Overall I am happy with the result and ready to get back to training.

HR was really high coming out of the water. It must be the combination of first wetsuit swim and really cold water temperatures.

HR was in the 160's for most of the bike which for me is high because of how much I struggle during the run I need to keep it more under control here.
Wind: Little
Course: Rolling hills with some longer uphill sections but no shocking efforts. Started off with a 1/2 mile uphill which didn't help my high HR
