Swim
Comments: swim really was a poor start. cold as hell, tough sighting. so cold breathing was a problem til i warmed up, and is i noted early, i failed to warm up in the water enough. so, first 250 was way under pace. second 250 closer to my target pace of 1:25/100y, but overall the swim was a big disappointment. you can lose the race on the swim! variables beyond my control really just included the sighting, which would have been tough in any case. What would you do differently?: warm up better, draft better so i would have to sight less Transition 1
Comments: t1 time seemed terrible, but was not too bad when looking at all the times. must have taken longer than i thought to just run across transition. fastest times were in the high 2min range, average is the mid 3s, so i should have done a bit better. cold feet made shoes tough, and i tried to dry off a bit cause it was too cold to be riding while dripping wet. What would you do differently?: screw the drying off, HTFU! Bike
Comments: felt faster than i was, apparently. but, it was a hilly course. i wanted to be in the 20mph range. wet roads made for tough descending, which cost me some easy speed/time. lulled into a false sense of speed while passing a LOT of people. apparently i was not that fast, it was that they were slow. oops. What would you do differently?: got a little bit more uncomfortable on the ride. pay attention to average speed a bit more closely on the computer Transition 2
Comments: T1 felt fine, no worries. time a little better than average. What would you do differently?: feet out earlier to improve dismount. Run
Comments: felt comfortable, but hadd too much in the tank at the end. however, at this point in the season, it felt appropriate, i guess. have not done any speed work, so the pace is naturally a bit slower. felt like i could have hung on for another 5k at the same pace, but would have still been tough to go much faster. What would you do differently?: find more speed Post race
Warm down: played with the kids in the expo center, walked around with the family Event comments: had a great time. for a smaller, cal poly race, very well done. i will be here every year, for as long as my body can do this. Last updated: 2011-03-28 12:00 AM

woke up early to head out and grab a good transition spot. coffee, bagel/pb/bannana/honey with some fluids to start. very cold in the morning (mid 40s) so bundled up. got a good spot in transition at the end of the rack near bike out. checked out the course, chilled and had a good time.
quick jog to warm up. so cold that I didn't want to get in the water too far in advance of my wave (wave 8), but then did not get in until just before my wave (mistake!). due to the cold, a long warmup in the water just prior to the gun would have been advisable.
