Swim
Comments: This includes about 15 or so seconds of T1 time as there was a longer-than-usual-for-a-pool-swim run to the timing mat once we got out of the pool. They had us run across the mat, then jump in and start swimming. I wasn't prepared for this type of start as all of the pool swims I've done in the past have had the start in the water. So, the jump in was a little jarring and I didn't do a good job breathing for the first 50 yards. After I calmed down a little bit and settled into a rhythm, it was better. 2 people passed me, both at the end of the lane, but I passed one back in the last lap (would have passed him sooner as I was touching his feet for 150 yards, but I didn't want to expend the energy to pass him until the end). What would you do differently?: Well, the lack of time I've spent in the pool is evident, as I should have been averaging 1:45/100. I've already committed to swimming more frequently, so that should fix the speed. But the other thing I need to work on is not getting anxious about the swim and working myself up too much. Transition 1
Comments: Pretty good. I had everything laid out and did everything according to how I had practiced it. What would you do differently?: I don't do the shoes-already-on-the-bike thing (yet), so that's something that would save some time. Bike
Comments: I don't really know why this was so weak, except that it took a little while to get into a good solid rhythm. I think it probably had to do with my lack of swim fitness wearing me out more than it should have. I also probably held back too much on the bike in an effort to save my legs for the run. Whether that helped, I don't know, but I wouldn't do it again. I need to work more on pacing. What would you do differently?: A lot. I felt good but I should have been at least a mile per hour faster, no question. Transition 2
Comments: Decent T2. Need quick-release laces. Run
Comments: Despite all of the bricks I do, legs felt, well, like bricks. Fortunately, as time passed, they felt better and better. What would you do differently?: Run more. ITBS and a sprained ankle really sidelined me. Post race
Warm down: Walked around, drank water. Stayed for the awards ceremony - won 2nd place in division! What limited your ability to perform faster: Training. I have a lot of areas to improve upon. But this was the first race of the year - dusted off the cobwebs for sure. Event comments: Jack always puts on a good, safe race. Last updated: 2011-04-24 12:00 AM

Woke up an hour late - BOTH alarms I set managed to not wake me up - and gulped a cup of coffee. Packed breakfast, got dressed, and jumped in the car.
Once I arrived at the race site, I ate my breakfast (yogurt with raw oats and a banana), used the restroom, then set up my transition area. Meant to get in the pool for a warmup, but waited too long and they closed it. It was super chilly for May (50*) and I hadn't thought to bring anything warm, so I was rather cold until the race started.
None. Oops.
