Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4:45, ate a bowl of cereal and had some coffee. Got dressed, went to the bathroom and headed out.
First race I went to by myself. Usually wife and sometimes son come with or are participating (wife) as well. Different being alone, but ran into some triathletes from the Lakeland tri club and talked to them a bit before the start of the race.

Event warmup:

Jogged for about 5:00 and swam about 100 yards or so. Had a good stretch while waiting for the race to start.
Swim
  • 08m 10s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 52s / 100 yards
Comments:

I thought I had a good swim.I know my swim fitness is not where it should be, but I felt good. I passed 3 or 4 people right away and I was close to the front to begin with. Felt like I was flying out to the first buoy. I must have slowed up too much, because while I only saw a couple of people pass me, I ended up with a mediocre time and 8th in the AG. I know I can do better.
What would you do differently?:

Keep the hammer on. After the first 100 - 200 yards I settled into a nice comfortably hard pace, but I think I could push it a bit more.
Transition 1
  • 01m 27s
Comments:

Long run through some sugar sand to T1. Overall I'm happy with this transition. 1st in AG and 5th fastest T1 overall.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 31m
  • 10 miles
  • 19.35 mile/hr
Comments:

This course is more like 10.66 miles, so average pace is not accurate. According to bike computer, I averaged 20.6 mph. Was averaging 22.2 mph going into the hilly section. I felt pretty good, but I did hold back just a bit to save some for the run. Turns out I think I can hammer the bike. Coming off marathon training, and HIM training, my endurance is fine. I need to trust that.
What would you do differently?:

Continue to hammer til the end.
Transition 2
  • 01m 9s
Comments:

Good
What would you do differently?:

Maybe run a bit faster with the bike.
Run
  • 21m 27s
  • 3.12 miles
  • 06m 53s  min/mile
Comments:

OK run. My endurance is fine, but I have lost a bit of speed while trying to lay off my injured left knee. I am going to try to run a bit more including a little bit of speed work before the next race, so we'll see how that goes.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Maybe push a little harder up the hills at the beginning. I jjst didn;t want to kill myself in the first 1/2 mile
Post race
Warm down:

Walked a bit. Waited to get bike out of transition. was trying to get back home for my son's Little League closing ceremonies.Didn't make it. Should have just stuck around and got my award.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swim and run speed.

Event comments:

Good race. I'm looking forward to the 2nd race of the series. Hoping to PR each race.
