Pre-race routine:

Sleep, whirlpool night before (NB: because I was in a hotel that had one)and a bagel with peanut butter in the AM. Got to race two hours before to have plenty of time to set up. This was first tri so I wanted to hav as much time as allowed.
Event warmup:

Should have been more, a little stretching, 5- 10 minutes in the water.
Swim
  • 10m 36s
  • 586 yards
  • 01m 49s / 100 yards
Comments:

Whoa, probably more than I bargained for as a first tri swim. Camaraderie at start was great and took a lot of stress off the whole thing.
What would you do differently?:

Practice ocean swimming if possible more (I really hadn't) and more open swims in general. Psychologically it makes a difference knowing how to swim without a wall to look forward to. I had done a lot of quality swim training adn was well coached but there really is no substitute.
Transition 1
  • 02m 44s
Comments:

Better than I thought overall, but I made some mistakes. See below.
What would you do differently?:

This is another area one needs to practice. One note, I put my watch OVER my wetsuit - bad idea !! Also, I use straps so "jumping " on the bike is something I may need to learn after I get real bike shoes.
Bike
  • 42m 34s
  • 14.7 miles
  • 20.72 mile/hr
Comments:

Nice course, good for my first.
What would you do differently?:

Perhaps gone a little harder. I did not know what exactly to expect.Drink more fluids. My cornering was not great.
Transition 2
  • 00m 53s
Comments:

I cheated here...I wore my running shoes while I rode the bike. I also wore no socks so all I had to do was rack the bike and take my helmet off.
What would you do differently?:

Put my number one before the bike ride.
Run
  • 21m 1s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 06m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

Course was pretty straightforward.
What would you do differently?:

Ran better than I thought I would. Drink the water I was given rather than splash it into my face. Work in some "bursts" during run to pick up some momentum.
Post race
Warm down:

None!!! Too excited, my family was there showering me with presents. I was very excited to see them.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Inexperience.

Event comments:

This is an excellent race overall. Fun crowd, excellent vibe. Very well organized. The ocean swim can be unpredictable but that is just mother nature! Highly recommended race !
