Comments:

Plan was to keep heart rate at 157 until mile 9, then "whatever I feel like". Wanted to keep pace slow the first 3 miles, then pick it up gradually. Did exactly that. Made sure I drank my maltomix every mile (24oz of mix - 325 calories), 16-20 oz water (refilled one 8 oz bottle several times) and 1 cliff shot (100 calories). Took 2 excedrin at around mile 5. Cliff shot at mile 8.5. Started pouring water on my head and face after the turnaround (could feel the heat and my face starting to cook). Knew that if I could do about a 10:30 the first 3 miles, then 10:10 or so the next 3, I could slowly increase the pace and keep my heart rate in check. It worked beautifully. I seriously picked up the pace at mile 9 and held it. The last mile was starting to get tough, I told myself "you can DO this" just hold on. I wanted to sprint the end, but there were too many tight turns, the cobblestones, people, and the final loop wasn't really made for sprinting to the finish - so still finished strong!!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing! It felt soooo good to still be strong at mile 8 and mile 9 - and I was passing tons of people - that's a REAL motivator for me.
Post race
Warm down:

get an ice towel for my neck and walk around - a lot. took two more excedrin. my right hip and left knee were pretty sore. Ate some pancakes and sausage, and a coke. waited for awards (my nephew took 1st place in his age group). My toes were numb and toenails were very tender to the touch. Went barefoot for hours. Ouch! Felt like I had run with my toes curled under gripping the bottom of the shoes (as if they were too big - they weren't, I've been fitted for proper running shoes).

What limited your ability to perform faster:

nothing :)
This was a PR for me!!

Event comments:

Great course, very well organized. Love the theme and the competition at each water stop (bands, music, etc). Lots of crowd support and lots of runners on the course the whole time makes it a very fun race. Super little park at the finish line with lots of activities. Beach towels were great, we could wrap them around us at the finish to warm up, then sit on them while we waited during the awards.

Course: FLAT. Starts in cute little town on very narrow road - packed shoulder to shoulder with marathon runners separated down the middle of the street from the half marathoners. Attempts to corral folks by time, was a good idea. Ran on winding roads along the water, pretty houses, watched the sun come up. Out and back course - with marathoners finishing their last 13.1 miles on the half marathon course.
