Pre-race routine:

My alrarm went off at 4:30 so I got up and made breakfast (2-pieces of toast w/butter & jam with coffee) At 5:45 Jennie and I woke Caleb up and threw him in the truck. By 6:10 we were on the road.
Event warmup:

Set up transition and registered. I got in the water about 10 minutes before everyone headed down to the race start and swam out to the first bouy and back. I also did some good stretching.
Swim
  • 08m 23s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 55s / 100 yards
Comments:

After the first 100m or so I felt like my roadID was flopping on my arm. Sure enough, I looked and just then it fell off and was sinking. I stoppped and snatched it up and stuck it in my wetsuit. Well, this moved me from the second row to off the back of the group before the first bouy. I got going again and started passing as many as I could. So overall I am happy with my swim time.
What would you do differently?:

Not wear my roadID again in a race. I wear it because Jennie got it for me and it gives her piece of mind. I don't want to lose it though so I will skip it for races. Maybe in longer ones (70.3 and up) I will slip it on in T1
Transition 1
  • 01m
Comments:

I picked the worst spot in transition. I knew it and I could have moved to the overflow area but I did okay. I was the furthest from the bike out, run out signs so that meant weaving through everyone else and crossing all of the transition area with my bike 2 times. Next time I won't do this again. When I got my bike about 1/2 of our wave was gone and I passed 3-5 more guys in transition as well so I was happy about that.
What would you do differently?:

Place myself better. Little things like this could help me in the end and I need to be aware of that on race mornings.
Bike
  • 37m 52s
  • 15 miles
  • 23.77 mile/hr
Comments:

Going in I wanted to push this bike ride and see what I could do. I was passing a lot of people and I kept my eyes open for my wave and I passed quite a few. By the halfway point there weren't many 5's left though as I would soon learn back in transition.
What would you do differently?:

Keep the pace up the whole time. I let my mind wander a few times and I think I could ave 25mph on this course if I stayed on it....Maybe next year!
Transition 2
  • 01m 31s
Comments:

Well, to my surprise, there were 2 bike in T2. I was running in 3rd in my wave which consisted of the M25-29 and M30-34 groups. I was really pumped!
What would you do differently?:

Another loooooong transition. Again, if I had moved I would have taken 30 sec or more off of this.
Run
  • 22m 8s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 07s  min/mile
Comments:

I tried to settle in and I got passed leaving the park by one guy in my wave (who I later found out was the winner). I pushed a pretty good pace and at the last turn I looked back and saw a guy I thought could be in my group so I got my little legs going as fast as I could. He got me 100 feet from the finish so I was bummed but he was like 6'-4" and I am 5'-8" so he looked like he wasn't even trying. It's a bit depressing LOL.
What would you do differently?:

Just keep on pushing. I don't know how much faster I could have gone but I'm just going to keep trying on improving my run. So far it is working.
Post race
Warm down:

Turned in my chip and dumped some water on my head. Jennie and Caleb met w/me and we talked under the pavillion. She was very happy with me and told me I looked great. Caleb gave me a hug and kiss. What else could you ask for?!?
I went and changed because we promised to take Caleb to the beach. When we got back to the park I got in line for food and looked at results. Coming into this race I wanted top-10 in my age group. To my amazement I had a "2" next to my name and had been listed in 18th overall. I was extatic (SP). I walked away with some hardware for the first time ever! Very happy.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Poor transitions. Losing my RoadID probably cost me 30 seconds or more. My overall run performance needs work, which is what my training focus has been, but it was really good for me right now.

Event comments:

I gave the post-race a below averace score because there was only water to drink. I am a big fan of the Coke!

Course: Zig-zagging out-and-back throug the streets of Pardeeville. It has a couple small inclines on the way out which you can really feel even though they are so minor. The feel fast on the way back though.
