Swim
Comments: Awful, self-destructing swim. Out to first marker was okay, then my breathing got all squirrelly and I could not get my heart rate down. Ended up doing so much backstroke my shoulders hurt. Absolutely embarrassing. I do go in almost a straight line in backstroke tho! Spent all that time training in the pool...obviously need to get out to open water at least once a week for this to improve. Ugh. What would you do differently?: More open water swims. I know I am strong enough, I swim at least twice a week in the pool. I just PANIC in the open water, plus the pre-race nerves just annihilated all my training strategies. Work on counting strokes, singing to self, ANYTHING to help keep my breathing regular and heart rate down. Transition 1
Comments: This transition time looks terrible, but it was because the 200m run out of the lake plus 300m of running from bike pen to mount. This is a looooong way to run with your bike and everyone had really long times for T1. I went as fast as I could. What would you do differently?: Make the bike pen closer to start line for bike. Everyone was complaining. Bike
Comments: Good bike leg. Should have pushed a little harder at the beginning. I had a rabbit to chase in the second half, definitely helped me pick up the pace. I don't really have anywhere flat to train, so I have a hard time pacing on flat surfaces for such a short ride. What would you do differently?: Push harder at the beginning. I know my legs can handle it. Oh, and not put strawberry flavor stuff in my water bottle. After all the lake water I drank, it made me feel ill. Just do water next time. Transition 2
Comments: Again, a long run back into bike racks. Overall, this transition was really very efficient and quick for me. What would you do differently?: Pin my race number to my race belt. I lost one of the snap covers for my bib and it was flapping around until I could get the spare one in place. Run
Comments: Pretty good run. I am not a fast runner, so this was a perfectly acceptable time for me. Legs recovered in good time, although my dad took a picture of me coming around the first corner and I look like I want to die. What would you do differently?: Do more BRICKS. Probably could have pushed it more in the beginning, but I was very tired at the finish. Probably more due to TERRIBLE swim than anything else. Post race
Warm down: Wandered around with parents and husband. Yummy Jamba juice! Was quite cold, so packed up fairly soon after finishing. What limited your ability to perform faster: Stupid swim. Must learn how to not freak out in open water. Could have placed soooo much higher with goal swim of 17:30. Event comments: Hope they change the swim course back to the old orientation so that the bike entrance exit is closer. Other than that, really love the location, fairly small size and excellent atmosphere. Will be back next year! Last updated: 2011-07-03 12:00 AM

Up at 5:45. Feeling bummed my race partner was not going to be there to help my jitters. 1/2 Bagel with peanut butter and banana, cup of coffee. Off to race site at 6:30am. Found race course changed from two years ago. Different swim pattern, LONG run from bike pen to bike start. Hmmm. Not really thrilled with the changes. Set up transition spot, everything made it into the bag! Hooray!
Nothing really - stood around shivering, hopping around, waiting to enter water with AG wave.
