Pre-race routine:

Alarm at 3.45am to get bike set up in transition as soon as transition opened at 4am. Was back in bed for 4.45am and slept until 7am. My wave didn't start until 8.50am, and transition closed at 5.45am so I figured it made sense to get to transition early and then go back to bed for a couple of hours. Staying in a hotel (the Hilton) near the event was a great idea!

Ate a banana and a yoghurt two hours before race and then a power bar and some gatorade about thirty minutes before.
Event warmup:

Competitors are not allowed in water before start so did not do a warm up.

Swim
  • 28m 21s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 44s / 100 yards
Comments:

I started right at the front of my wave and went off very quickly for first 30 seconds to get ahead of the pack. This tactic worked and after a minute or so three of us had broken away from everyone else.

It didn't take long for us to catch the slower swimmers from previous waves, however, and from then on I was constantly having to dodge in and out of packs of swimmers. It definitely felt good to be passing so many people, especially as I took it fairly easy.

Nothing.
Transition 1
  • 02m 11s
Comments:

As you can imagine, a transition area containing 5,000+ bikes is somewhat larger than the transition areas I've encountered in Bermuda. Fortunately the racks were clearly marked and I had no problem finding my bike (even though it had been pitch black when I set up so I was a bit worried I may get lost in there during the race).

Bike
  • 1h 13m 38s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 20.25 mile/hr
Comments:

The road surface was not great at certain points, and due to the volume of riders on the course, as well as a number of dropped water bottles in the road, I found I had to concentrate a lot to avoid any incidents. I saw a number of people with flats and apparently there were a couple of crashes as well.

The above did not detract from what was a fun bike course, however.I think I'm so used to riding hills that any flat course is like a god-send.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 2
  • 02m 4s
Run
  • 54m 12s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 44s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt good until mile 4 and then struggled for the last two miles. I'm not surprised as this is only the second olympic tri I have ever done, and my body is not really used to exerting itself for 2 hours 40 minutes.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Overall endurance.

Event comments:

I was very happy with my time and finishing position. My original aim had been to get close to 2:30 but that was before I realised that transitions alone (including the run from the end of the swim to T1) would take around 7 minutes. The tough swim conditions, and the strong wind on the bike course also probably cost me a couple of minutes so all in all 2:40 was a very good performance.

Course: Due to high winds, the water was VERY choppy. I was watching the waves infront of me and a lot of people were struggling. Fortunately for me swimming is my strength, and the more difficult the conditions the more I get an advantage over the weaker swimmers. The time above includes a 400m run from swim exit to T1. My actual time in the water was just over 25 mins.

Course: Bike course was very fast/flat and a lot of fun. We had been told in the race briefing that we should always stay to the left and only move to the right-hand lane to pass. I found that I was constantly passing people, however, so I pretty much stayed in the right lane for the entire race. There was a strong headwind on the way out of the city but then coming back was all wind-behind and I was riding at 24mph+.
