Pre-race routine:

Slept at my in-laws house so we'd be closer to the race site. Didn't sleep that well - my feet dangled off the full-size mattress that my wife and I shared on the floor. Chili for dinner the night before is not my ideal pre-race meal either, but it was nice to stay with them and they were going to watch the kids while we ran.
Event warmup:

most of my warm-up was the long walk from the car to the race start. found some bushes for a last minute evacuation and headed to the start corral.
Why do people who walk or run significantly slower always try to line up near the front? C'mon people!

Comments:

I started off well amd was cruising. I gaven't run a 10K in 4 years and really didn't know how to - it's longer than a sprint, but more than a pace yourself half marathon. that said, I was feeling good until mile 3 when I started to slow. a small side stitch, but I was able to keep going. really felt like I was battling - I knew I was slowing down, but hoping it was mental so I could finish strong. I finished mile 6 stronger that mile 5, but gave it all I could on this day. I feel I've got a faster 10K in me, but I'll get there. This was a PR by 1:44 and I'll take it.

Sidenote: I took water at the first of 2 aid stations and water-boarded myself. Water I couldn't swallow in my mouth, water up my nose. I did almost have to stop here to catch my breath. I opted against water at the 2nd aid station
What would you do differently?:

maybe take a flask of water with me - musg easier to drink from on the run. More speedwork for this distance
Post race
Warm down:

my wife, who hadn't been running much at all, ran 5K of the course and then headed to the finish. (I secretly think she was more thinking about getting everything ready for Thanksgiving and having guests over, but that's a different story). I saw her shortly before the finish and I was glad to be done. I beat the turkey (he runs it about 45 min) and got my card. grabbed some water and headed off to the car

What limited your ability to perform faster:

core training, 10K pacing

Event comments:

2nd time doing this event and it's really nice. lots of very good runners (winner was 29:42 - a 4:47 pace) and lots of other runners of various abilities.

forgot to war my HR monitor, but I was happy with mile 1 (crowded) at just over 7, mile 2 at 6:45, mile 3 just over 7, but then I started to fall off. 7:12, a brutal 7:27, and then 7:14.
Course: an almost figure 8 in mesa. mostly streets, but some sharp turns around cones onto some gravel and (ugh) grass
