Pre-race routine:

Didn't sleep well and woke up without much appetite. Had a banana and sipped on a gatorade. There was a winter weather advisory. Fearing that the bike portion might be cancelled, we almost didn't go. Finally, made up our minds and headed on the 50 minute drive.
Event warmup:

Some easy laps running around the parking lot. Still babying the freshly-healing stress fracture.
Swim
  • 09m 46s
  • 400 yards
  • 02m 26s / 100 yards
Comments:

I really struggle with the swim being last of the three sports. Heart-rate is racing off the bike, and I was out of breath from the bike as well. After becoming fairly panicky in the pool last time, I just wanted to be comfortable. So I swam very slow and focused on relaxing. Even though I swam a few seconds slower than last time, I was happy because I was able to relax way more and get comfortable in the water.
What would you do differently?:

Swim first!

Bike
  • 38m 15s
  • 12 miles
  • 18.82 mile/hr
Comments:

Satisfied with the bike. Need to do some intervals and hills, as my bike fitness is not yet where it was last season.
What would you do differently?:

Pay more attention to traffic. Very narrowly escaped being hit by a car at 60-70 mph
Transition 2
  • 01m 35s
Comments:

Bike to Swim
What would you do differently?:

A little awkward stripping down in the freezing, cold transition area
Run
  • 22m 59s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 25s  min/mile
Comments:

Coming back from an injury, I decided to try and stay comfortable with 7:30 avg pace. I was able to achieve my goal, but I have lost a lot of fitness. My avg 5K time before injury was 2.5 minutes faster than I ran today.
What would you do differently?:

I need to build up my running base again and start incorporating a little speed work again.
Post race
Warm down:

I climbed out of the pool and into a nice, toasty, humid room. The last thing I wanted to do was go back out into the frigid cold, so there was no warming down.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The swim. I think there will be a nice time improvement when the swim is the first event. Transitions need help, too. Clipping into my pedals needs work. The run should improve as my fitness does.

Event comments:

We just love this series. The awards were fantastic. I got a really nice trophy for finishing second, and all the age group winners got little trees to plant. The volunteers and organization is top notch. There are a few dangerous areas on the bike that could use a little more traffic control/volunteers. Other than that it's an A+ event!
