Swim
Comments: Course had you go to first buoy due east, right turn for long stretch and then final right turn back into the beach. Bit frustrated on first leg of swim. Was excited to start, but once I got in the water I got really nervous for some reason. Hard to see buoys while staring at the sun, had lots of people grabbing at me. Felt like I was taking in enough air, slight stitch in right side until I hit first buoy. Didn't really get into a flow until halfway between second and third buoy. Just felt like a lot of work. What would you do differently?: Maybe not eat cold creamy pasta an hour before race. Kept burping it up during the swim. Need to just have gels once I get to race site. Transition 1
Comments: Long run from transition to bike out. Had shoes already in pedals. Worked out fine. Nice stretch once you're on the bike before you hit the course proper. Makes for a great time to do the shoes in the pedals in transition. Bike
Comments: Official site has my avg speed at 18.03. Saw that yesterday post race and got super excited. Then came back to hotel and inputted into this site. Avg more like 17.85 which jives more with my personal Garmin timing. Had to urinate about 3 miles into the bike. Was really uncomfortable until about mile 20. Then feeling just went away. Made for a bit of a miserable ride. But I still had a really good ride. What would you do differently?: Should have gone to the bathroom in transition area first. And have to find a way to get more fluids on a winding urban course. Had water in my front aero bar jar, but didn't even drink that too much because of bladder pain. Transition 2
Comments: went fine Run
Comments: Not a good run. Really bummed since I've put in the miles this year. Very hot, humid and sunny. After two miles started to want to walk. Fought that off until final 4/10 of final mile. Started walking then. Really mad that I did. Ran through the final chute. I think the lack of hydration during bike caught up with me. No cramping or discomfort. More of a mental thing. Just thinking about the heat, hearing myself groaning a lot toward the end. Just a bummer. What would you do differently?: Drink more fluids on the bike. Post race
Warm down: Walked around in a daze for about 20 minutes post race What limited your ability to perform faster: Not enough fluids on bike. Mentally not as focused as I should have been. Event comments: Really wish I had done better mentally. Was really pumped going into this race based on workout levels I've achieved in last 12 months. I do think the heat was a big factor on the run. I guess if I wasn't training so much it might have been a lot worse. Hard to tell. After sleeping on it, makes me want to work harder for the next race. Last updated: 2012-04-10 12:00 AM
