Pre-race routine:

Too early for breakfast, though I should have forced myself to eat something healthy. Instead, I opted for Endurance Gatorade (orange), coffee, and a doughnut. Arrived early to the race site, and made my way through registration quickly, and racked in a great spot. After organizing my equipment, I joined the rest of my club.
Event warmup:

Walking/jogging around, mostly. Tested the water (warm), then opted for wetsuit. Forgot to stretch.
Swim
  • 12m 17s
  • 528 yards
  • 02m 20s / 100 yards
Comments:

Really had trouble breathing today. I think the fatigue of travelling a lot recently set in; it was the first time ever that I've felt uncomfortable on the swim. Occasionally, I would pause freestyling and do breast stroke to catch my breath.
What would you do differently?:

Skip the wetsuit; the water was warm enough that I could have bought time here. Need significantly more swimming time. I've been out of touch with the water.
Transition 1
  • 02m 27s
Comments:

Felt a bit slow; the rain made everything sticky to put on/take off. Organized pretty well, but could definitely have cranked a bit more.
What would you do differently?:

Consider skipping bike socks for a Sprint.
Bike
  • 52m 59s
  • 12 miles
  • 13.59 mile/hr
Comments:

Did a good job at reeling people in, though I lost to several good climbers. There was a portion at the beginning of the course at a fork where several riders, including myself, took the left instead of the right; this cost me about a minute when they asked me to turn around. Several minutes later, they let folks behind me who had gone up the road, take a sidecut back onto the correct route, which I thought was very unfair. Que sera...
What would you do differently?:

Practice hills, hills, and more hills. Mooseman prepped me for this, but I still need work.
Transition 2
  • 00m 36s
Comments:

Fast, fast, fast! I did well here!
What would you do differently?:

Take feet out of shoes on the bike, and run barefoot into transition.
Run
  • 38m 24s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 12m 23s  min/mile
What would you do differently?:

Practice, practice, practice those hills. Stretch hamstrings a bit more (sore!). Sleep and better nutrition in days leading up the race, to prevent such drastic burnout.
Post race
Warm down:

Walking around, ate water and grapes. Forgot to stretch (!!). Ate lunch with the club and cheered on age group winners.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training and focus.

Event comments:

This course was challenging, which I wasn't prepared for, but that didn't sour my desire to try it again next year. The rain stunk, but the course was beautiful and the after-race BBQ was delicious. With more training, I could really do well here.

Course: 12 mile out and back course on Road Round the Lake and Route 10. HILLS, HILLS, AND MORE HILLS. I cannot tell you how much I underestimated this course. In and out of Eastman was the steepest, a few other good ones; the middle portion was mainly flat/easy rollers, so I made up a lot of time there.

Course: 5k run along the west shore of Eastman Lake; 1 water stop at the turnaround of this out and back course. Off-road trails = HILLS, HILLS, HILLS. Yikes! I was not prepared for this...my fatigue from this week set in on the run, and I performed miserably...Normally this would have taken me 27 minutes, but today, 38 minutes. Ugh!! More hill training and better preparation needed; looking forward to upcoming track workouts.
