Pre-race routine:

Last minute invite to do a local Sprint Tri-pretty hot and I wasn't really into a 3 hr bike training ride that I had on the schedule, so I weighed the decision to experience a mass swim start vs ANOTHER medlong bike ride...hmmmm.

Off to the races! Told my wife, who escorted me, quickly packed my stuff and off we went.
Event warmup:

Very quck ride out. Parked close. Got in line, paid, set up bike/transition. Got wetsuit on and met Jim and Peter. Swam about 3-4 minutes and felt good in the wetsuit. They described the course outline to me.
Swim
  • 13m 7s
  • 457 meters
  • 02m 52s / 100 meters
Comments:

The idea was to start in the middle, near the front to experience the most pushing/shoving etc. I was not disappointed. I was constantly bumped, pushed, swam over etc. I did not get kicked and this may have been due to the fact I kept up better with the crowd. Breathing was still way too fast in the beginning. Easily got caught up in the moment. Settled myself twice by treading water and breathing slowly. Out in 6 minutes to buoy, back in 5, so even though I started faster, I swam faster when controlled and relaxed.

Must swim my OWN RACE.
What would you do differently?:

Start off to the right to stay out of the scrum.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Swim time included the transition 1 time-went pretty well. My wife was yelling to me-'sit down', I heard someone yelling but was still working my feet out of the wetsuit and when I finished, I thought that that sitting down idea is a good one, so I did.
Went quickly after that.
What would you do differently?:

Know that the timing chip is on my left leg and it will take a bit of extra work to get the suit over it as it stuck on that heel.

Got on the bike and started up the small hill out of the transition area but something didn't feel right, checked the cassette while picking up the pace and shifting aggressively gaining speed and quickly look at the front derailler-all good. Thank the police officer for 'being out here' turn 90 degrees to the right and I can feel that my front rim is on the ground-I know I have a flat and am going to crash. I go sideways, trying to land on my right elbow and save my bike. I skid out into the middle of the road, having been on the left side passing people. I pick up the bike while the cop is directing people to slow and go around me. Run the bike off the road to the grass and begin to think about what to do. My elbow is bleeding (both actually), right knee has 3 quarter sized bloody patched with no skin. Knee is sore, shoulder is sore but I'm functional. A small crowd gathered around me asking me questions about changing tires while I was working, which was odd. Check the bike, gears seem to work. Put it into the small chain ring and biggest gear to change the rear tire. Then I remember, it's the front tire that's flat. Take off the tire, pull out the tools. Unscrew the c02-take off the tire in record time for me. I have 2 extra tubes, so I'm going to finish, even though it's a sprint and most people would not. New tube in, work it around, tire on-slower than I would have hoped. Blow it up but there is an outpouching of the tire with an area that looks suspicious on the rim. I tried to pry the tire back in but it won't go and then goes flat again. Something looks wrong with the rim. Walk my bike to transition amongst the stares and sorry faces. Some ask if my leg is alright as blood is totally covering it by now. I then took out some wetwipes and cleaned it off. Found my wife, waited for my buddies. Jim finished 24th OA, Peter 38th OA. Jim had to go back to the hospital and work. We left and went out to eat.
