Bring my shallower training wheels just in case next time

Think I ran the first 3 miles too fast and started hurting around mile 10
What would you do differently?:

Run a more even pace throughout
I know better but felt too good early in the run and I had a slow run time for me

Was surprised I finished third in my group as it was a tough day due to the weather
Overall great race but I doubt I will risk doing another on the atlantic coast due to the fact that the swim could get cancelled at any time of the year
