Pre-race routine:

Such a hot night at my in-laws... woke up way too early at 4:45. Finally out of bed at 5:45. Coffee, relaxed with my daughter, light breakfast of tomato, avocado and steak. Quick shower to freshen up and a quick drive to the course. Horror unpacking the car as I realized my back tire was flat... the heat in the car the previous day had blown out the tube. I had no backups. So stress going into the event trying to find the fix-it stand. They got me all taken care of. Was smart this time and ensured my bike was in a low gear before racking it. Learning... always learning.
Event warmup:

After Tzone set up, got in the water and did some light swimming for about 150m. Got over the trepidation of getting my face in, found a comfortable stroke and worked on relaxing with lots of people around. I credit this for overcoming my swim-panic I've experienced in other races. Also gave me a chance to get used to the weediness of the lake.

Comments:

Got caught up in a bit of current on the second half of the course. Had trouble getting back to the line... likely swam further than i needed to. Was a bit disappointed that I was barely faster than the last race, when I was wearing a wetsuit for the first time and panicked my way through the water start to finish. But really, super happy to FINALLY have swam 'like a swimmer', with decent sighting and good HR and breath control... in truth that's all I was hoping for this race. The speed will come with more experience I'm sure. 45 second improvement from my last race. 300% mental improvement from my last race!!!
What would you do differently?:

Consider being a bit more aggressive getting into the water. Purposefully stayed to the back of the wave to reduce the panic I've had in the past. Keep closer to the buoys to be more aware of drift.
Transition 1

Comments:

LONG run from the beach, around the whole T-area and then into the racks. I felt well organized and not disoriented this time, as there was no water panic to recover from.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really. It was a super long run so i had time to get my head together. Took an extra 10 seconds to get a drag off my puffer and a quick sip of fluids before heading out... was SO humid.

Comments:

Lots of great support from other racers. Was much appreciated as a newbie to the sport. Couple of short steep hills, but overall, a reasonable course as compared to my training. Suddenly glad i live on the hilly side of town. Humidity was so high, was still dripping wet at the end. 6 minute improvment from my last race!!
What would you do differently?:

Not much. Felt good about the bike. Work on some out-of-the-saddle climbing... needed it and still not comfortable with it on the new bike. Also... RAISE YOUR DAMN SEAT ALREADY.
Transition 2
  • 01m 12s
Comments:

Happy with this. Could have taken maybe 5 seconds off this time by running with my cap in my hand and putting it on enroute, but who are we kidding... I'm doing this for fun, not for fame and glory.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. Pretty happy with how things went. Was not ready for the amount of 'cross country running' that was ahead.
Run

Comments:

I've had stand-alone 5K times very similar to this, so I'm actually really pleased... 3 minute improvement from last race! Felt tired in the legs, but not the exhaustion I've experienced in the past, so I think the hydration changes really helped out. Running through the hose spray was great, as it was a nice cooling break on a very muggy day. Some pretty decent hip tightness was a bit distracting. Was not a fan of how much running on grass there was, but at the same time, felt good on my ankle and hip. Great support from a group of us working together to finish. Saw my family 3 times!!! was so happy to have that support... they rock!
What would you do differently?:

Consider running of better variety of surfaces just so there are fewer surprises. A few more bricks leading up to my A-race will again add to the improvements I've made over the last month, and a few more longer runs (6-7K) will improve mental fortitude when the fatigue sets in. I am so much happier with the quality of this run compared to last race... better HTFU factor.
Post race
Warm down:

Lots of water, stretched out calves and hips a lot... very very tight. I have some big knots waiting for me to roll out after today's jog. My daughter helped me choose food in the great food tent... was hardly hungry though. Just wanted to dry off! Sat, ate and enjoyed watching the Half-ers on the beginning of their run.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Experience and fatigue. Overall I'm really happy with how this went...was not intended to be my A-race, but so many improvments from last month!

Event comments:

Great! Super course for spectators. A little confusing at the beginning as vendors/check in areas were quite spread out... coudln't find the body marking/chip folks... thank goodness the volunteers were awesome as always!
