Pre-race routine:

Got to 'sleep in' compared to most races, as it was a 9 AM start. Left the house around 6:30 after breakfast, getting to the parking area around 7:15. Gray skies and rain didn't bode well for the weather.
Event warmup:

After setup I got in a 1.4 mile run with a few teammates.
Swim
  • 08m 16s
  • 560 yards
  • 01m 29s / 100 yards
Comments:

Felt pretty crappy at the swim start, and didn't get into a good rhythm. Without a warmup, it was hard to adjust to the cold water, but not an excuse for a rather poor swim.

Wanted to be around 30 seconds quicker, oh well.
What would you do differently?:

I've been putting in good volume and intensity in the pool, so I can't say much I would have changed.
Transition 1
  • 01m 4s
Bike
  • 26m 25s
  • 10 miles
  • 22.71 mile/hr
Comments:

The heavy rain really didn't help me out in this race. I was expecting to be around 25 minutes, but took it super easy on the descents and turns. I was on a borrowed bike, and I only rode in aero 20% of the time. It was too risky to be in aero - absolutely crazy conditions. At times I could barely see and the rain stung!

I saw at least two people who had crashed on corners early on, so knew it wasn't worth it to push that hard. I was planning on averaging around 330 watts, but came in at only 300 with NP of 326 (due to pushing the hills).
What would you do differently?:

Have no rain! Kind of hard to say it was a below average ride when it was the top time, but I'm capable of much better.
Transition 2
  • 00m 41s
Run
  • 18m 15s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 05m 53s  min/mile
Comments:

I was hoping to be right around 18:00, but it was mentally hard to push when I knew I was racing the clock. I knew the faster guys were in the 1st wave, ten minutes ahead of me, and I always do better when I can push against others. I guess I need to have the mental ability to push, even on my own.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster, duh!
Post race
Warm down:

1 mile jog with a few teammates

What limited your ability to perform faster:

poor swim and lots of rain

Event comments:

I was about three minutes faster than when I did this race two years ago, and that day didn't have any rain. Still, I feel like I underperformed. 1.5 min faster would have given me the win. Hopefully it'll be a better day when I race a HIM in five weeks.
