Pre-race routine:

Ate regular raising bran and milk for breakfast at 6:30. Left for Missoula at 7:00. Ate bread w/butter and honey at 9:40. Took Excedrin and two ibuprofen at 11:00.
Event warmup:

Ran around on the grass to get my heartrate up.
Swim
  • 17m 25s
  • 1000 yards
  • 01m 44s / 100 yards
Comments:

Because I decided at the last minute to do this race, I wound up in a heat much slower than my usual speed. Since I knew there wasn't a chance of a PR this year, I decided to really just relax and enjoy the swim.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Under the circumstances, I really enjoyed it!
Transition 1
  • 02m
Comments:

Well, I had a very hard time getting my bike shorts onto my wet legs. I was laughing, and there were people watching who were laughing, too. It was funny!
What would you do differently?:

Well, there must be some trick to putting bike shorts on over wet legs. Guess I'll find out what that is!`
Bike
  • 45m 10s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 16.51 mile/hr
Comments:

The wind was brutal on the way back. Tucked in and mashed it out.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing I could do about the wind except keep going! I dropped my water bottle a mile out, but it only cost me a few seconds.
Transition 2
  • 01m 30s
Comments:

Slow and methodical. Good enough for me today.
Run
  • 34m 7s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 10m 58s  min/mile
Comments:

I had vowed to take it easy because of my ACL. Pretty happy that I didn't have to walk, except on 'the hill'.
What would you do differently?:

I should have run faster. If I wasn't much tempted to walk, I believe now that I could have pushed it.
Post race
Warm down:

Explained to my friend that asking people questions the instant they finish a race is like asking questions of a woman in labor.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Tore my ACL 6 weeks ago. Missed 4 weeks of run training.

Event comments:

On Thursday I ran 2.5 miles on the treadmill. I was very surprised because I didn't think I still had that distance in me. I realize my weight loss has contributed to increased speed. I decided that day to e-mail the race director to see if he would reinstate my registration. He graciously did!
