1/2 Exrra Large regular coffee-3hrs before race
Banana-2 hrs before race
1/4 Large jar apple sauce-2 hrs before race

Event warmup:

Dynamic stretches-didn't have time for any other warmup
Swim
  • 11m 3s
  • 440 yards
  • 02m 31s / 100 yards
Comments:

Constantly banging into people at the start. Stayed to the right to stay out of traffic but went too far. Had a couple others with me, but they were on my sides-no drafting. Found myself turning my head too much to breathe. I didn't feel like I swam badly-but I definitely swam too far by going off-course.
What would you do differently?:

Stay in tighter to the buoys
Should have sighted more frequently
Concentrate more on technique and less on being afraid of getting kicked in the face.
Transition 1
  • 02m 37s
Comments:

Couldn't get the suit off my ankles-had to sit down. Couldn't get clipped into the bike for anything. Between the pouring rain, the excitement of the race, being surrounded, and the uphill start I think it took 5 pushoffs before I got clipped in and going.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure-I guess practice getting out of the suit and practice getting on the bike in a hurry.
Bike
  • 33m 6s
  • 10 miles
  • 18.13 mile/hr
Comments:

Having lots of duathletes already on the course made it interesting. Many didn't stay to the right and it was traffic-y in spots. Nearly lost it once or twice on big bumps with wet handlebars.

Very happy to have my bike rank about the same as my run rank. I think that means I have improved at the bike and I pushed it hard enough.
What would you do differently?:

Stay off of the slick part of the handlebars when they're wet!
Transition 2
  • 02m 2s
Comments:

Wet feet made for a slow T2. Left shoes tied so I could just slip in to them but wet feet don't slide.
What would you do differently?:

Not let it rain. :) OR Leave shoes unlaced in the event of rain OR speed laces
Run
  • 22m 22s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 13s  min/mile
Comments:

Pushed hard. Thrilled that this 5K was only 5 seconds off my stand-alone 5K PR!
What would you do differently?:

In retrospect I always feel like I could have gone harder and faster. That may or may not be true, but I did feel like I was on the verge of throwing up for a good solid half hour.
Post race
Warm down:

Walking around, light stretching, long walk back to the car.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swim technique, the swim route I took, transitions.

Event comments:

Having the parking so far away from registration makes it annoying. Big cracks in the road-especially inside the state park, make it a lot less enjoyable. Pre race information was phenomenal. Everything during the race was great as far as volunteers and the placement of water stops. Post race BBQ was delicious! Awards ceremony dragged on forever and was very annoying.
