Swim
Comments: A pretty conservative swim, but I'm happy with how it went. Navigation was spot on, even with a stretch facing straight into the sun. Had trouble finding consistent drafts despite the number of people in my wave. Didn't really push the effort until after the final turn. What would you do differently?: Could've pushed the pace more from the beginning. Transition 1
Comments: Not my best T1 ever, but overall pretty efficient What would you do differently?: Had a little trouble getting the helmet on.. starting to accept the fact that my aero helmet is probably too small for me. Bike
Comments: The course definitely lived up to its reputation! My goal was to practice my Ironman pace, but all the climbing made that difficult. It sure was fun though, I love riding in this kind of heat! I did ride the flats at a moderate effort, and rode aggressively downhill (free speed without expending much energy!) for the rest of the course. My nutrition plan went, as I got started early eating a gel every 30 minutes and hitting my bottles every 5 minutes. This will be key at IMLP so I'm not in such bad shape for the marathon like last year. I was feeling a bit tired by the end, partly due to the hills, but also do to poor long distance fitness. Definitely going to have to be my focal point for the next 8 weeks. What would you do differently?: Considering this was a tune up for Lake Placid, not much Transition 2
Comments: Aside from racking my bike in the mountain bike slot initially, this was a smooth T2. I briefly glanced at my body glide and considered putting some on my ankles, but decided to get going on the run instead (cue foreboding music). What would you do differently?: Rack my bike properly Run
Comments: The course started off innocently enough, with some flats and even a downhill! Around mile 2 I felt my shoe rubbing against my right ankle... maybe I shouldn't have skipped the body glide after all. By the time I finished the whole back of my shoe was soaked in blood - lesson learned (the hard way, as usual)! Chafing discomfort aside, I was feeling great at the start, but a quick look at my watch and I knew I was going too fast. I've learned from experience to slow down and control my effort, which I did for about 5 seconds before the course went uphill for what seemed like miles. It was time to focus, in this heat the line between moving forward at a decent pace and blowing up would be extremely thin. About halfway though I realized I hadn't been passed yet, while going by tons of others, many of which were walking (reminded me of an Ironman course). Suddenly a female came blasting by me, I yelled "great job, keep it up!" and as she returned the gesture, I noticed her calf was marked 'P' - she was a pro! I'm guessing she had some major issues on the bike to still be out there, but how cool to exchange words of encouragement with a professional triathlete on the race course! I kept trucking along through the never ending hills, and as the sun got high and the shade disappeared, the heat finally started getting to me. It took all I had to keep running hard, and the final hill was especially cruel. After sprinting through the finish line I was BEAT. The massive medal they hung around my neck nearly knocked me over. Leigh helped me over to a shady place to sit down so I could finally get off my feet. Despite all the blisters on both feet, my bloody ankle, horrible chafing under my armpits, and total exhaustion, I felt great! What would you do differently?: Probably should've treated this more as a training run, but I was having too much fun! Also: BODY GLIDE!! Post race
Warm down: Sat down in the shade, got some fluids in me, then walked around and stretched a bit to prevent locking up. Ran into some local friends (who actually helped get me in the race in the first place!) and ate with them while we shared stories from the day. What limited your ability to perform faster: Always bike fitness... Event comments: What a great event! Post race food left something to be desired, but otherwise for a race this large I thought it was fantastic. I would definitely recommend Rev3 to anyone. Last updated: 2013-06-01 12:00 AM

Woke up at 4:50, ate some toast and a bagel with PB, put my race tattoos on and headed to the race site. Transition closed over an hour before my wave launched so I hung around with Leigh and applied a few coats of sun block before going to the beach.
Swam for a few minutes before getting in the coral. Liked that we were able to warm up right up to the start time.
