Pre-race routine:

Was a little crunched for time due to GPS Navigator issues getting to the course. Ate an english muffin (untoasted) with peanut butter and an apple about an hour before the race. Stretched, got set-up.
Event warmup:

Stretching.
Swim
  • 07m 11s
  • 400 yards
  • 01m 48s / 100 yards
Comments:

All the plants and whatnot that were basically less than a foot below my hands were freaking me out. Other than that, I did well drafting. When I got to T1 and my Garmin started picking up the signal from my HRM, my HR was well over 90% of my max HR, so I obviously wouldn't have sustained my pace for long, but that's why God invented short courses!
Transition 1
  • 02m 35s
Comments:

I don't like to start with my shoes already clipped in, hence a slightly longer T1. I'll worry about that when 1 minute is keeping me from the podium.

Pretty good T1 other than I hate getting the damn wetsuit off over the racing chip.
Bike
  • 26m 38s
  • 9 miles
  • 20.43 mile/hr
Comments:

Really went hard on the bike. It helped that I was chock full of adrenaline and with an extra high HR for the beginning, but I also smelled blood in the water after I passed a couple of people and didn't want to give it up. Was running a full 2.5mph faster than my usual training ride pace.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I had plenty of juice left for the run and passing felt good!
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

No timing data was given for some reason...I could work it out based on total time minus other splits but I don't really feel like it. I realized that although I don't like putting my shoes on with them attached to the bike, REMOVING my feet from the shoes while still coasting is much easier and I should probably start doing that.
What would you do differently?:

Taking my feet out of the shoes prior to reaching the dismount line.
Run
  • 30m 20s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 50s  min/mile
Comments:

Fun run, although I was SUPER fatigued coming off the bike. Legs started cooperating after about the first half mile or so. I was focusing on faster splits over each mile using my Garmin and I met my goal!
Post race
Warm down:

Walked until I got my HR back down. Then FREE MASSAGE TIME.

Event comments:

Awesome race and organization. The announcer was very smooth and the logistics of the race were well thought-out. Safety was obviously a primary concern for the race director and all staff, which is always comforting. I enjoyed the format of this race and, although it wasn't a very LONG course, it was fun and made for some good racing nonetheless!

Course: Three sides of a rectangle: 100 x 200 x 100. A little hairy -- I swam over some broken-off bridge supports at one point that seemed to come close. Could see pretty well to the bottom i.e. all of the creepy plants peeking right up at me.

Initially very high HR. Came down to about where I like it (155-160) after 10 minutes or so.

Relatively under control (150-165).
