Pre-race routine:

woke up at the hotel and got dressed and loaded up the van. The girls were very sleepy. We got a late start.
Event warmup:

Swam 50 or so yards before my wave started then headed over to the start
Swim
  • 07m 3s
  • 400 yards
  • 01m 46s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim was awesome. I have never tried to go out hard right off the start on a race swim start before. With only 18 men in my wave I figured this was the time to try it. At the horn I went full (reckless) sprint for the first 75 to 100 yards. At about 60 yards I realized I was elbow to elbow with another swimmer and we were alone. I could see a couple of swimmers close together maybe 5 yards ahead of us when I sighted. I kept motoring on and the other guy faded a bit. At the turn buoy at about 200 yards I glanced back and I was a few feet ahead of him and pretty solidly in 4th. I held that position and exited the water 4th in my wave.
What would you do differently?:

As hard as I started I only knocked 7 seconds from my previous race time for this course, but faster is faster. I do need to do more 400 yard sprints leading up to this race for training if I go again next year.
Transition 1
  • 02m 10s
Comments:

Felt much faster than last race but I was actually slower than last race here. I did wrap my goggles and ear plugs in my swim cap and leave it in the arm of my wetsuit and that worked great.
What would you do differently?:

Need more practice going sockless and that would save some time
Bike
  • 26m 10s
  • 8.3 miles
  • 19.03 mile/hr
Comments:

I went hard from the start and tried to maintain as best I could. I was passed by a handful of guys on the bike course. I forgot to put my water bottle on the bike when I set up transition! I didn't realize until I was already out on the bike course, DOH! It cost me a lot because I already had a bit of a sore throat and I wasn't able to keep my throat wet during the hard effort. According to my bike computer the bike course was .3 miles longer than last race.
What would you do differently?:

Remember the water bottle, stupid! And of course train more on the bike.
Transition 2
  • 00m 56s
Comments:

my fastest T2 ever even with a 2 second or so hesitation and almost turning down the wrong aisle to my transition spot
What would you do differently?:

Still need to get yankz laces in my race shoes for these super sprints and train some short steep hills for any races at Rancho Seco.
Run
  • 17m 29s
  • 2 miles
  • 08m 44s  min/mile
Comments:

This run was hard. I had to get water for a very parched throat at both aid stations on the run (run start and just after the turnaround). I did manage to pass a couple people, but had a couple pass me too. The pace was about all I had in me on this day.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around trying to catch my breath. Got water and drank it then layed on the grass in the shade

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of focused training, sore throat, warm temps, smoke in the air. I'm full of excuses.

Event comments:

A very fun race. I'm glad TBF decided to do this one and I hope they will keep it on the schedule for next year.

I was awarded a trophy for second best costume!

Course: Out and back along the park road and then onto hwy 104. Not much vehicle traffic. CHP monitored for safety. Roads in the park were fairly smooth. Several speed bumps to cross. Areas with many small round pavement markers near pedestrian areas in the park also. Once onto hwy 104 the pavement is more rough, but very few potholes. Some low rolling hills but no big climbs. Turnaround is very tight in the middle of the roadway, but well manned by volunteers warning riders in advance.
