Pre-race routine:

Had some Sushi with Jenny the night before. Turned in early for bed after messing with my front derailleur a bit. Seemed like it was clicking for some reason (cue foreshadowing) Thought I got it... off to bed.

Up at 3:30a.m so I could get breakfast in and then make the hour+ drive to Kingston.
Event warmup:

I go for a ride... get about a mile out and I can't shift back up into my big chainring... my derailleur is also grinding... wtf. I get off and check and first think that my front derailleur has dropped. After some closer inspection I realize the BRAZE has dropped (I had to modify it to accept the Osymetric rings) CRAP.

I take it to the mechanic on site and after explaining what the problem was he gets me up and running. Not 100%, but good enough to race on for a day. Thankfully. I spot him some $ and eternal gratitude. Then get a run in and hop in the water for a couple of strokes. I seed myself towards the front and wait for the canon.
Swim
  • 24m 54s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 40s / 100 meters
Comments:

Holy $#!T!!! What is going on here. 1st out of the water in my AG (4th out of the water in the wave - men under 40) and 12th overall? It looks like the changes I made to my stroke a few weeks ago are paying off. Some contact right at the start, but I break away about 200m in and swim alone for the entire rest of the swim. This was a great swim for me, very excited.
What would you do differently?:

Swim some more and get some more practice at race pace. Still, it's hard to be mad at this :)
Transition 1
  • 01m 7s
Comments:

A little slow coming out of the gates today. I needed a few extra seconds getting my swimskin off.
What would you do differently?:

Practice with the Skin a little more.
Bike
  • 1h 03m 14s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 23.65 mile/hr
Comments:

Oh how bittersweet. To say I was anxious about the derailleur is an understatement. My plan going in was to aim for an intensity factor ~ 1 and the end result was 1.004, so I think I paced well. That said... on the turn off of the main road there was a nice little "rough" section. When I went to shift down for it, my CHAIN DROPPED!!! NOOOO. It was also jammed between the chain catcher. I guess that didn't get adjusted too good when we got it back together. I jump off and fiddle with it for a minute or so, finally getting it wedged back on. Off we go again. I climb the last incline in the big ring just to be sure I don't drop it again... I'm terribly sad because I was well on my way to a 1hr 40k (and not even a TT) Oh well. Despite my mishaps I still managed the second fastest bike split.
What would you do differently?:

Have to look over the bike and see where the failure was. Planning to upgrade the old warhorse (Planet X) this off season as well. Next time... sub hour 40k.

Hard to say this was a "good" ride with the issues, but...well, 1:03:xx is acceptable for the day :)
Transition 2
  • 00m 34s
Comments:

Took me a second to get my Zoots on, but smooth sailing from there.
What would you do differently?:

Speed it up. Forgot my Body Glide at home...should have had it.
Run
  • 42m 52s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 06m 53s  min/mile
Comments:

The first 5 miles were pretty unremarkable... and at that point the other fellow in my AG was able to run me down. I tried to surge on him and see if he cracked, but he is just a way better runner than me and he overtakes me and I just have to watch him go. I don't ever see another person until the last 500m or so when another racer (not in my AG, but I didn't want to chance it) is storming up on me. I give it the final sprint and make sure he doesn't get the pass.
What would you do differently?:

I have got to learn to run. 12th swim/ 2nd bike / 22nd run?? Puhhhlease.

It's been my downfall for a couple of years now... time to fix it.
Post race
Warm down:

Congratulated some of the other guys and got me some good old Coke and banana's. Waited for the awards (2nd, yay) and then waited even longer to see how I did in the "series" of RaceDayEvents races. Got 1st in my AG and get a hardshell for my troubles! Huzzah.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Bike woes and not having a strong enough run.

Event comments:

It's a Race Day Events race. They know how to do it.
