Age Group Rank = 106/25
Pre-race routine:

woke up at 445am, ate bagel and drank gatorade. Arrived at site about 0530. Set up TA. Couple of trips to the restroom. Ate a powergel about 640am
Event warmup:

Jogged about 5mins in parking lot.
Swim
  • 13m 24s
  • 500 yards
  • 02m 41s / 100 yards
Comments:

Decent swim. Need some more distance work in pool. Got choked up a few times. Could have had much better time with more conditioning. I got caught up with slower swimmers crossing in front of me. Pretty good swim for 1st ocean swim ever.
What would you do differently?:

better conditioning
Transition 1
  • 04m 2s
Comments:

Several hundred yards from beach time pad to TA. Took about 20secs and downed a powergel.
What would you do differently?:

Walked most of distance. Needed to catch my breath. Would have preferred to run but this will come with time. Fumbled my stuff a little in the TA but not bad overall. Much better than my first event.
Bike
  • 39m 2s
  • 12.8 miles
  • 19.68 mile/hr
Comments:

Good bike. Passed lots of riders. Was passed by very few.
What would you do differently?:

use aero bars
Transition 2
  • 00m 53s
Comments:

Great transition. Yanks are the greatest thing since sliced bread. Dumped helmet and gloves. Slipped on running shoes and gone.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing--about as good as I could have hoped
Run
  • 32m 34s
  • 3.2 miles
  • 10m 11s  min/mile
Comments:

legs really tight. Right knee felt stiff. Walked much more than I wanted to. Seemed to be able to string together 3-4 mins of run at a time. Hooked up with another guy early on and hung near him the whole time. About mile 2, we started running together and pushing each other. Kept the run going all of the way in. Pushed the pace up with about 250 yds to go and then sprinted the last 100yds. Kind of strange but this was my best 5k time ever!!
What would you do differently?:

More conditioning--did what I could with what my legs had to offer.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around putting away stuff from TA. Walked over to post-race food and got some. Karen and I went back to the hotel and had a big breakfast

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Continue to improve conditioning. Felt great for my 2nd race and 1st ocean swim.

Event comments:

Good race. Would like to do again next year as a measuring stick for my training.
