Pre-race routine:

Drove to Rochester the night before to stay with my grandparents, so the drive wouldn't be as long. Went to bed at around 10pm, ate carbs all day. Probably didn't drink enough water, and drank too much Gatorade.
Event warmup:

My first multi-sport event..looked around at everyone's bike stands and rolled out with my used 1985 fuji road bike. Was happy to see some mountain bikes and some clunkers at the transition area.
Run
  • 27m 35s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 52s  min/mile
Comments:

I need to train better for a 5k run. I'm still in half-marathon mode.
What would you do differently?:

Train better and calm down.
Transition 1
  • 01m 53s
Comments:

Easy cause I don't have cycling shoes yet. Had to stop to drink something before I got on. Put on cycling shorts over running shorts, and I'm glad I did.
What would you do differently?:

Not much
Bike
  • 46m 57s
  • 20 kms
  • 25.56 km/hr
Comments:

No hill experience, it was fun to figure out what gears to use and when. Was figuring it out pretty well though. Had tons of fun and it really made me love cycling. I loved passing people and it was my favorite part of the race.
What would you do differently?:

I need a patch kit, a spare tube, just in case. Also, tri shorts and cycling shoes and clipless pedals, along with aerobars, would be way more efficient. I'll add the components one by one.
Transition 2
  • 01m 43s
Comments:

Pretty good. Forgot to take my sunglasses off though. I came back and tossed them on my setup. My mom and grandparents were watching as I came off the bike and got a picture of me smiling!
Run
  • 36m 4s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 11m 36s  min/mile
Comments:

OK it was really hot at this time, about 88 degrees. I figured I wanted to finish my first du so I shuffled along slowly. At least I was able to cheer people on as they fought to conquer the run course. There were patches of shade but not quite enough. I should push myself more next time, for sure, but I was just happy to be in the race at this time so I just chilled.
What would you do differently?:

Go harder..much harder..now that you know you can do it. I wasn't completely spent at the end of the race like I was in the half marathon a few months ago, and I should be.
Post race
Warm down:

Took a short run around the transition area

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of 5k speed and interval training.

Event comments:

It was my first but definitely not my last! I loved it!! Bring on the tri!

HR monitor was bothering me a little.
Course: Out next to the bikes, not many duathletes. Out on a trail, onto the side of the road, up a dirt road with a long hill. Out and back. Only one water/gatorade stop.

Good HR. Need to calculate a better max bike HR.

Course: It said on the website that "the bike course will kick your butt." And it did! Not a lot of flats at all, almost completely rolling hills. One huge hill was great going down but horrible coming up. Very fun and challenging course though, on side of road with traffic. Not many turns.
