Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4:30 and had oatmeal at home, stopped at hardee's for coffee and a chicken biscuit on the way (on a 1.5 hour drive). After I got my packet and set up transition, drank some gatorade and ate a banana, then watched the olympic swim.

Comments:

Started myself in the front of the pack and got swum over a TON. Never really drafted but held a pretty direct line from start to finish. Was difficult getting into a rhythm, for me a pretty terrible swim. I just don't like being in with everyone....can never seem to get used to it.
What would you do differently?:

Swim training. OWS/group practices.
Transition 1
  • 01m 37s
Comments:

This was a great T1, I was able to run all the way through and just get moving.

Comments:

For me - a perfect bike ride. I realized as I was turning left on a slight downhill as I tried to brake I couldn't - dumb me didn't check that the brake calipers were CLOSED before leaving transition before the race. I reached down and grabbed the front one while riding, tried to get the rear but couldn't and figured I'd chance it. This was a bad call. While riding I drank plenty of water and besides the one early hill I rarely struggled. Passed a LOT of riders, that always feels good and never happens for me. Enjoyed every minute out there.
What would you do differently?:

NOTHING!
Transition 2
  • 02m 41s
Comments:

So...as I dismounted I fell. I think because of the brake issue, I didn't stop as quickly as I expected to and was just moving too fast and went down as I tried to hop off before the dismount line. Which wouldn't be a big deal, but I definitely twisted my right ankle the way I fell. Decided I'd run and see what happened, forgot my race number, luckily another athlete reminded me to get it and I was on my way. By now it was HOT.
What would you do differently?:

Close and check brakes, duh!
Run
  • 32m 54s
  • 5 kms
  • 06m 35s  min/km
Comments:

It was HOT at this point. The first half mile my right ankle was KILLING ME. KILLING. Then it got numb and I just plodded through the run. Walked all the water stops to get enough water in me. All said, not a bad run, it's the best I can do on 75 degrees in direct sun!
What would you do differently?:

Not fall off my bike and sprain my ankle? Despite the ankle and the heat - this is a great 5k time for me.
Post race
Warm down:

Ate a crab cake, drank a beer, sat in the shade down by the water to relax a bit. Tied up my ankle to get some compression on it.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Falling off my bike! AHHH!! Lack of swim training.

Event comments:

Beautiful venue, beautiful weather, this was a great last minute decision race and one I would make again :)
