Pre-race routine:

There was threat of rain and t-storms the night before. In fact, we had major storms in Shreveport and Natchitoches Saturday night. Was rethinking participating, but my tri club friends were not having any of it. I knew that if I didn't show up even if it was pouring down rain, I would have been tarred and feathered. Got up at 4:30 a.m. to make the 1 hour drive down to Natchitoches. It was overcast and DARK. Actually went to McD and got a breakfast burrito and OJ. Drove down to Natchitoches.
Event warmup:

Got my race packet. Nice black shirt, socks and a polar water bottle...cool! I've been wanting one for so long! Yay! Waited in line for porta-potties. Walked around and said hi to friends. Oh, the bike racks were so small....not enough room for bikes. Set up my bike and transition area. Came back and some idiot had racked his bike seat first with his back wheel completely ON TOP of my transition area. I couldn't even get to my shoes. I had to move my transition area over. I always make it a point to go back and recheck my bike....I'll continue to do this from now on.
Swim
  • 20m 11s
  • 880 yards
  • 02m 17s / 100 yards
Comments:

It was not a dive start...that would have gotten you a penalty. It was either a jump in or sit on dock and fall in. I did the sit on dock and fall in. The water was actually very comfortable. I navigated poorly. It was just a straight away, but for some reason I sighted incorrectly and ended up in the middle a lot. Was told that I was swimming with my body deep in the water and when I took a breath, it looked like I was lifting my head out of the water. I need to have someone look at my swim pattern. This was a TT start....they basically lined us up by bib number and started us one by one with 2-5 second intervals. I loved it! It made is less congested and I was able to swim better. Too bad they can't do this for other tris.
What would you do differently?:

I need to keep practicing my swimming. I feel like I'm so slow. And I keep swallowing water.
Transition 1
  • 01m 34s
Comments:

Standard transition. Nothing spectacular.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 1h 13m 10s
  • 20 miles
  • 16.40 mile/hr
Comments:

I need to get my bike in for a tune up. My gears were acting up. Wouldn't stay in gear in the higher gears and kept shifting back and forth. I need to learn how to ride hills too. I'm not too thrilled with my pace time but I think it will be better next season. There was one downhill where I was able to come down to 30mph to the straight away....felt good. Some of the route was very rough and I saw 4 guys with flats.
What would you do differently?:

Need to keep riding and start riding hills. I really want to get up to at least 18 mph on the bike during a race.
Transition 2
  • 01m 23s
Comments:

Smooth transition. Got everything going pretty well. My feet sure felt cold and soggy from the bike shoes, but felt great in the running shoes.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 38m 54s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 12m 33s  min/mile
Comments:

This is my fastest run this season! I should be very proud since at my first triathlon (Jefferson Tri), I couldn't run and finished in 47 minutes. I've improved on this run by almost 2 minutes from my last triathlon (RiverCities). I'm very pleased. However, there is so much room for improvement. The run was just a normal run. I felt strong, but I was still slow...oh well! When I was coming across the bridge, I started to feel a cramp in my left calve and was really worried, but got some Gatorade at the water station...I usually don't drink Gatorade because I'm a diabetic, but thought I better get some electrolytes just in case. It worked.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing...just have to run more. My run times are so much slower compared to all the other triathletes.
Post race
Warm down:

Packed up the bike and got me some jambalaya and meat pies.....delicious!! Walked around and chatted and congratulated folks. It was nice and cool.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Need more practice. Didn't really swim at all before this race. I've been riding, but not as consistently since it is close to the end of the season. Need to run more. Lots more room for improvement.

Event comments:

Didn't have enough water stations for the run...just one. But I suppose since it's at the time of year that it's not as hot, they figured we didn't need the water? Bike racks felt really rickety and didn't seem long enough for 8 bikes. This was a fun race. It was very spectator friendly and the weather was perfect...even though it was overcast. I will be back next year!
