Pre-race routine:

I wasn't sure how I'd do in this race since my mountain bike crash 3 weeks ago left me with either bruised or cracked ribs, still not sure which but still hurts to where I can't sleep on my stomach. But I've done some easy running up to 10 miles so I figured I'd at least finish even if I had to back it down.

As a K.C. Corporate Challenge Ambassador I volunteered to help set up in the morning since it was looking like they would be short for people. Got up at 4:30, took my usual wake up shower and got there at 5:30. I helped set up the metal fencing that forms the start/finish chute and hung sponsor banners along the fence. After that met with my co-workers, was glad to see we had 12-13 people show up.
Event warmup:

I didn't leave much time for a warm up but I ran easy for about 3/4 of a mile.

Comments:

I was line up more to the front than I should have. It felt like normal 5K pacing but when I looked at my Garmin for the 1 mile time it said 6:33! Ruh Roh this is going to hurt later. And it did.... i looked at my HR a few moments later it was 171. I was wondering how long I could keep that up.

One of my friends, also in my AG came up along side of me, we were going way to fast to talk. He slowly drifted ahead of me and I had no answer. I knew anyhow the 50-54 age group would be stacked this year so I wasn't to worried about it as I'd be lucky just to crack the top 20. Looked at my watch after mile 2, 7:10 but there was about 70 feet of gain in mile 2 so expected a slower pace. Coming down to the finish I just had no speed whatsoever, I've done this course a few times before and my last mile had always been faster than my first. Not today. Finally crossed the finish in just under 22 minutes. Not my best performance but I'll take it given the circumstances.

My Garmin 920XT had the race distance at 3.2 miles with the following splits:

Mile 1: 6:33
Mile 2: 7:10
Mile 3: 6:48
Total 5K split at 21:41 with a pace of 6:52 per mile.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe go out a little easier in the first mile.
Post race
Warm down:

Waled around, talked to friends, co-workers, fellow triathletes about next weeks tri and other races. Then some of my co-workers and I went to Niecies for breakfast! A big ol' omelette, grits and biscuit and coffee!

Event comments:

Very good race, the KCCC always do a great job at this event.
