Swim
  • 1h 18m 6s
  • 4224 yards
  • 01m 51s / 100 yards
Comments:

Last wave to start. Not a great swim, cramps started after 2nd buoy and never let up??? Usually get a few cramps, but more towards the end, not this early and not continual. Made for a tough swim.
What would you do differently?:

Hydrate better leading into race. Was doing great until day before when I slacked off, lesson learned.
Transition 1
  • 10m 45s
Comments:

More cramps when wetsuit was stripped. Also slipped on tape in T1 room as I was running into the changing area Slid right in on my ass! Not a good transition at all.
What would you do differently?:

Not crash...
Bike
  • 6h 12m 16s
  • 112 miles
  • 18.05 mile/hr
Comments:

Rough roads, hit big hole and rocks at about ~31 miles and heard my front wheel make weird nose, then air deflating. Crap! On a steep descent no less. Stopped and changed flat (all by myself!) and continued on.

Barlow was crowded by the time i got there with the last swim wave start and flat, but I was determined to ride it. A couple times people got very close to me but I made it up no problem.

Rest of ride was uneventful except those roads beat me up. Coming back in I felt the wind, was just ready to be off the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Practice flat repairs. I didn't do too bad, but could have been faster. Practice nutrition, this would come back to bite me on the run.
Transition 2
  • 05m 58s
Comments:

Uneventful - no slipping and falling.
What would you do differently?:

Speed it up!
Run
  • 5h 38m 33s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 12m 55s  min/mile
Comments:

Started out alright until mile 4 when my stomach started not feeling so great. Held it together for another 3-4 miles the best I could, but by mile 8 I felt so sick I walked the rest. Just gonna forget this ever happened.
What would you do differently?:

Practice nutrition!!!
Post race
Warm down:

Sucked down water, couple bites of pizza and eventually grabbed a beer with Tom & Ben.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Bad nutrition plan, sloshy stomach, and maybe a bit too much fun touring breweries leading into the race.

Event comments:

Madison is such a great town with tons of great places to eat, grab a nice craft beer, or relax with a cup of coffee. 2nd time doing this race and both times we had a fabulous time. Such wonderful volunteers, the town really embraces this race. Highly recommend!
