Total Time = 1h 16m 59s
Overall Rank = 10/493
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 2/41
Pre-race routine:

Alarm went off at 6:15 and I hit the snooze button once then hauled my tire ass out of bed. Made a cup of coffee, grabbed a banana, and started to load the bikes and gear. Made it to the ocean front about 7:15 and headed to transition, got marked and claimed my spot on the rack. Organized my gear and it was time to clear out and make the walk down the beach for the start.
Event warmup:

Minimal time for warm up. I got a 2 min run and 2 min "swim" in the pounding surf. Didn't even get a chance to make sure the bike was shifting properly after switching to my race wheels.
Swim
  • 17m 54s
  • 1000 meters
  • 01m 47s / 100 meters
Comments:

Seems like every year the swim is either closed out or close to it...I'm not a fan of rough ocean swims. Tough breaking surf getting from the beach out to the firts buoy and then it wasn't so bad. It probably took me 3-4 min just to get out to the turn buoy. The current was really ripping and I made good time even though it didn't feel like I was swimming particularly hard. The timing mats were up at transition...my actual swim time was 16:56 on my watch.
What would you do differently?:

Swim with more purpose and focus.
Transition 1
  • 01m 6s
Bike
  • 38m 12s
  • 14 miles
  • 21.99 mile/hr
Comments:

They started M30-34 in the last wave so there were TONS of people out there to pass. It wasn't uncommon to come up on people riding 2 and 3 wide. I actually had to swing to the other side of the cones a few times to get past people. There was a decent headwind on the way out Atlantic and through Fort Story so that was keeping ym speed in check. Once I made the turn down Shore Drive the road surface smoothed out and the wind was gone so I was able to settle in and start cranking. Turning onto Atlantic we picked up the tail wind and I was able to push 27-28mph over the final 5 miles. I held a ver steady HR over the entire ride and averaged 164bpm which is right at my LT (last I tested it).
Transition 2
  • 01m 1s
Comments:

The entrance into transition was congested and I had to fight my way past 5 or 6 other people who weren't nearly in the hurry I was...that's what happens when you start in the last wave but are competing for the podium in your AG. Aside from that I still had a decent transition.
Run
  • 18m 44s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 06m 02s  min/mile
Comments:

The run out was hot with the wind to our backs. I wasn't very impressed with my first mile split despite running with the wind...something around 6:05. After the turn it wasn't so hot but now I was running into the wind and there wasn't anyone running nearly fast enough for my to draft off or work with so I just plowed through on my own. I missd the 2 mile marker but my split for miles 2 & 3 combined was 12:03 so I was at least maintaining my pace. My HR built from 165bpm to 175bpm over the run. I should be able to maintain 175+ for the entire 5k so either I just wasn't pushing myself hard enough or my training over the past week is showing a bit and I need a couple rest days.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked back the run a bit and walked/jogged in with Katie.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I didn't feel especially fresh and motivated today. I suppose my training this week and only 1 day of rest didn't really set me up for an explosive race but I did reasonably well overall and can't really complain. this was just a fun local race that gave me a change of pace from the usual training.

Event comments:

They had some food and water/Garot on the beach after the race and then moved on to a local reatuarant with a big outside area foe beer, burgers and awards. I think it worked out well and it was a great day to be outside.
