Run
Comments: This was my first ever attempt at this distance, so I went out VERY conservatively. I had a goal of finishing just under two hours, though I told myself that if I came in over that, so what! I basically just wanted to finish the race and not suffer (too much) while doing it. I fully expected to be last. I thought I would be alone for most of the run but it turns out I stayed with the same small group of about 7 for most of the race. In the last two miles, half of the group fell far enough behind that I couldn't see them any more and a couple of them pulled a little bit ahead of me and became my rabbits -- which was good because I was definitely getting tired by then and needed a goal I could SEE. I never quite caught up to them again, but they were always just within reach and that helped keep me going. It was very windy on the course -- steady 19 mph with gusts up to 31 mph, so that was... uh...interesting to say the least. My leis were blown around quite a bit! I didn't drink anything while on the course, maybe I should have? I never seem to want to drink WHILE I'm running. I know this will be a limiting factor when I try for a marathon, so I guess I need to experiment with fluids while training. What would you do differently?: Nothing for this race. I was much faster than I expected and I felt good the whole run. Post race
Warm down: Really wanted the Krispy Kreme donuts that were part of the after-race spread, but I had a banana and a mini cinamon-raisen bagel instead. My dad, AKA "Mr. Under 8% Body Fat", had the Krispy Kremes. Life is so ironic sometimes. Drank plenty of water and watered-down gatorade. We stayed for the award ceremony since my Dad was getting one (the awards were cute little metal guys holding airbrushed surfboards, really nice!). Oh, and I somehow managed not to win a single doorprize, darn it. What limited your ability to perform faster: Me, I'm a newbie runner and this is as fast as I go at this point. :) Event comments: Good race with a nice course with lots and lots of award categories, including a Hawaiian Shirt category and tons of door prizes. Nice people. I'd like to do this one again next year if it fits in my schedule. Last updated: 2006-11-03 12:00 AM

Woke up at 4:30 a.m. before the alarm went off, so I got up and had two pieces of peanut butter & honey toast and 32oz of water. I planned to eat a PowerBar 30 minutes before the race but I forgot. Since the race had a Hawaiian theme I decided to wear several leis during the race, include one on my hat and one around my ankle, plus several temp tattoos of parrots and flamingos. Might as well have fun with it all, right?
None really. Walked around looking to see if anyone else was wearing an MP3 player because the registration form said they weren't permitted in this race. But I saw lots and lots of people with them on and since I knew I would be in the BOP (and possibly alone alot) I decided to wear mine as well.
