Pre-race routine:

I didn't get a very restfull sleep, I was very excited to run my half-mary! I was awake at 4:15, wandered around my apartment, prepared my bag and had a big breakfast (1 small banana, 1 breakfast pita, almond butter, 3/4 cup of Vector cereal with 1/2 cup milk, a large cup of coffee and 2 cups water).

I left home at 6:00, drove downtown, parked right next to the hotel where the shuttle buses were waiting to take us to the starting point. I had a very relaxed and fun conversation with a woman who will be running the NYC marathon and she was all excited to find out this was my first half-mary; we chatted about her past runs, triathlons and how she would like to do a try-a-tri next year. I also ate a couple of raspberry bars and sipped on water during the ride.

I took the gear I needed and dropped my bag at the van.
Event warmup:

I ran through the beautiful York cimetery - like a lot of other runners - for about 20 minutes, did a dynamic warmup and some static stretches. I hit the port-a-potty, sipped on my mixture of Gatorade and HEED and headed to the start line looking for my 2h30 pace bunny.

Comments:

I started slowly, stayed with my pace group for a while and then caught up on the 2h15 pace group. I only stopped for water once, I carried two bottles with me along with one of Gatorade/HEED and a flask of Hammer Gel, I had one ounce every 45 minutes with water.

I picked up the pace at kilometer 7. Everything went well up until kilometer 17 where I began to feel a little tired. From there on, I began to run 10 minutes, walk one.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around the site, got my thermal blanket and stood in line for a massage. Things were moving rather quickly as there was a huge team of massage therapists and apprentices. I picked up my bag, drank my Endurox and had a bagel, a banana, and plenty of water. I walked back to my car - about a 15 minute walk - while chatting to my mom about how well I did on my first half-mary. I drove home, took a warm shower, stretched some more and went to bed for a 2hr nap.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Being sick until one week before this event and perhaps not incorporating enough speed drills and hills during my run workouts.

Event comments:

I nailed my nutrition plan, there was no chance for me to bonk.

I have no regrets for picking and running the Toronto half-mary but this race was too close to my last triathlon; getting sick shortly after my oly tri last month hindered my training. I would love to do this race again next year but since I am doing the Muskoka 70.3 next September, I will chose a half-mary that is 6 to 8 weeks after that event, possibly the Angus Glen half-marathon in November; this will allow enough time for me to properly recover from the HIM and train well for this race.

The race organization was great; the cheerful crowds, volunteers and psyching team were fantastic.

Even though this race was a "C" event, I am overall pleased with how I performed and did better than what I anticipated. I am beginning to love running!
