Age Group Rank = 11/17
Pre-race routine:

Up at 5:05am. Ate power bar and a banana. No bowel movement. Stretched in hotel room in the dark while my wife slept. At transition area for body marking at 5:45. Set up trans space. Drank 12oz water while walking around and stretching some more. Talked to a bunch of other racers. Body glide applied at 6:50, wet suit on and over to wait in my wave.
Swim
  • 38h 29m
  • 1640 yards
  • 2h 20m 46s / 100 yards
Comments:

Very out of swim shape. Bad performance. Got cut on my right hand by someone's toenail, and swallowed water at another bunching point around second turn bouy. Had to make myself puke before exiting water to get rid of the nausea. But then I felt great!
What would you do differently?:

Practice swimming more.
Transition 1
  • 03m 31s
Comments:

I'm slow in T1. This was my first time getting out of a wetsuit after a swim so I took my time. After that it went well and off I went...
What would you do differently?:

I'm gonna buy a tri suit so I'm not fiddling with a shirt and shorts.
Bike
  • 1h 24m 41s
  • 25 miles
  • 17.71 mile/hr
Comments:

I really enjoyed the bike leg. I thought the roads were well paved. There was a portion with car traffic around us waiting to pass where I breathed in a bunch of exhaust. But overall the volunteers and policemen kept it very safe. I drank one 16oz water bottle and had one GU.
What would you do differently?:

Go faster!
Transition 2
  • 01m 42s
Comments:

This was fast for me considering I run in my biking shoes through transition. Running shoes went on quickly.
Run
  • 1h 03m 51s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 10m 17s  min/mile
Comments:

I wanted to be around 10 min/mile and I did it without any walking at all which is very good for me. I carried a water bottle to sip on and had a GU half way through. Hearing the crowd at the finish line was awesome and the announcer named us as we came up the finish chute. I was very tired at the end but not dead. I was able to eat the BBQ right afterward.
What would you do differently?:

Not carry my water bottle. It wasn't hot enough that I was dripping sweat. The aid stations would have been enough to keep me going.
Post race
Warm down:

Immediately had a Gatorade and Smokey Bones BBQ.

Event comments:

Very worth doing. The only reason I gave it a "4" was I don't know what a "5" would be. But I will do this race every year they have it.
