Age Group Rank = 13/20
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at the hotel, had my typical OJ, clif bar, and bagel. Headed to the race with my brother and sister.
Event warmup:

Got settled pretty quickly. Stretched and went on a 10 minute jog with my brother and sister as a warmup.
Swim
  • 14m 34s
  • 580 yards
  • 02m 31s / 100 yards
Comments:

For the first time, I felt like I had a good swim. I sighted well, breathed well and drafted when I could. No panicing to start out. I really like the start in the water. Wish more races had this.
What would you do differently?:

Go faster! :-)
Transition 1
  • 01m 47s
Comments:

Solid transition. I wish I didn't have to run so far in my bike shoes to get to the mount area, but I have zero confidence in putting my feet with the shoes already clipped in. I did put my sunglasses on only to have them fog up...that doesn't happen in Colorado. I ended up not wearing them.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Bike
  • 35m 18s
  • 10.3 miles
  • 17.51 mile/hr
Comments:

Awful road conditions. Not that this is the fault of the race, but it was so bad that people were riding near the centerline to avoid the road conditions, which made it even more difficult to pass. Alot of people I passed were not on the right and I had to make one pass on the right because the person was on the center line. I had a rental bike and it performed flawlessly, so I was really happy with that!
What would you do differently?:

go a little harder...
Transition 2
  • 02m 17s
Comments:

I got stuck behind a couple of people going into transition that I would have liked to pass, but not a big deal
Run
  • 25m 47s
  • 2.5 miles
  • 10m 19s  min/mile
Comments:

the run was okay, but not my best. heavy legs took their toll at the beginning along with the long gentle climb to the turn around point. I couldn't find someone to latch onto for a good pace, but I was more interested in keeping my lead over my brother and sister so I was conservative as well.

The water stop ran out of water on my return...and that sucked, but wasn't necessary for me to post a good time.
What would you do differently?:

Go out a little harder and push more on the return. The last couple of tris/running races have been 4+ miles and I didn't do a good job of pushing since it was only 2.5 miles.
Post race
Warm down:

finished, hung out to see my brother come in 4 minutes after me and my sister 2 minutes later...

What limited your ability to perform faster:

less than stellar run

Event comments:

I think the swim course is long and the roads for the bike are in awful condition!

Overall: 144/356
Performance: Good
Suit: QR ultrajohn
Course: There is no doubt in my mind that the swim was more like 700 yds. At my June tri, I did an 800 yd swim averaging 2:38 per 100 and that included a long run to and from the lake and my putting on my wetsuit since I did the swim as the last leg in the tri. I do 1:40 per 100 in a wetsuit in a pool...Yes, OWS is a little different but I felt great. My brother is also a consistent 2:00 per 100 guy for an OWS and came out 17 seconds a head of me
