Pre-race routine:

Woke the kids at 0330 and got on the road. Hit road construction at the zoo and had to backtrack. Hit a detour downtown and had to back track again. In hind site I should have seen this as a bad omen. Finally arrived at Elkhart, found the donkies , set up and milled around.

Warm down:

Watched the donkies finish strong- including a first place clydsdale.woo hoo. Packed up the kids and drove home. Disappointed but OK since this was not an A race for me, It just turned out to be an expensive swim.

Event comments:

This was a time trial start- 2 at a time every 5 seconds so no congestion. I was planning on 40 minutes for the swim, so I surprised myself. Swim varied between free style and breast because I got a lung full of water about 400 yards in. Got out of the water feeling really good and was looking forward to the bike.

Course: The problem begins... Went out hard and was catching many people form earlier waves. About mile 3 I heard a hisss...not good. Pulled over and noticed rear tire was somewhat low, but not fully deflated. Added more air from the Co2 and started riding again. another half mile and another Hissss. This time the tire went flat. No big deal- this is a "c" race and prep for the HIM in 2 weeks. I'm changing the tire on the side of the road, asking the riders who were passing me to save me some food and offering to sell them my bike. All said jokingly. Had the TnT's laughing as they road by. Finally got the tire replaces and back on the bike. Passing people and feeling strong. Up spun up a few hills and was feeling great when...Hissssss. Popped tire number 2. I only carried one tire so my race was over. The guy directing traffic at the next courner gave me a ride back to transition.
