Swim
Comments: I forgot to put my timing chip on my ankle bracelet so I don't have any splits, just overall time. Classic! I started in back and away. I started slowly which is what I wanted to do, since the swim is the weakest part of my race, and I had a terrible swim last race and basically couldn't breathe the entire race. It was a good swim for me and I had a lot left in me. I kept my breathing in control so my allegies and asthma didn't take over. Water was warm with only 1 chilly spot. What would you do differently?: work on 2 sided breathing in training and introduce it into a race. Transition 1
Comments: went well. I just sat down an grabbed my extra towel to dry a foot really quick, didn't do the other to save time, and just put on my bike socks and shoes, etc. My shirt already had my gu's and shades in the back pocket. I ran with my bike to start line. What would you do differently?: Not bother trying to dry or clean off my feet before putting on socks. Maybe find a way to carry my shoes to the start line so I can run faster, even though it wasn't so hard running in my bike shoes this time. Bike
Comments: I took some gu within first 3 miles. My legs felt kind of dead most of the race. Took some more gu maybe in middle or towards the end. I poured out some of my drink early on so I wouldn't carry the extra weight. It worked out well. What would you do differently?: Take my gu completely and in a simple fashion. Transition 2
Comments: I rode my bike all the way up to the dismount line. I thought this worked best. Some other people stopped 10-15 feet away and I think going all the way to the line worked better. I ran down to bike rack with no problem. Actually my legs were a bit wobbly running down the incline after I got off my bike, and I was just trying not to get injured. But it went well. I just ditched all my stuff. Didn't bother switching to my more padded socks, put on shoes, and was off. I should have left my shades which were still in my back shirt pouch since it was still early am and the course was shady. They were annoying me some on the run. But on a hotter day I would probably use them. I also took a good shot of my gatorade/etc drink before heading off. That was a good idea. What would you do differently?: ditch shades for this course. Run
Comments: The gu's really helped on the run. It took about 1.5 miles for my legs to freshen up some and then I picked up speed. It would have been nice to have seen more mile markers. Since the course was twisty and in the woods, it would have been nice to know where I was at so I would know when I could do my kick and sprint finish. What would you do differently?: ditch shades for this course. Post race
Warm down: I was handed a cold orange powerage immediately at finish and started drinking it. It was good, but my stomach started feeling queasy soon after. But it looks like I normally get sick after these races. It could be the combo of gu, gatorade, exertion, and other sports drinks at end. I was sick for quite a few hours after. ate some bread they had there. drank a few mini bottles of water. What limited your ability to perform faster: I could still improve my swim time even though it was my best swim so far. Event comments: We could have used more bathrooms. I had to wait like 20 minutes before swim. I guess with the relay races this day there were a lot more people, but they did have a lot of people at this triathlon as compared to others in general. Early race. Got up at 4am and went to pick up my sister. Got to race site by about 5:30am with 6:30 am swim start. pick up packet. Pick up timing chip. Lay out stuff on towel. I spent a lot of time waiting in bathroom line (20min).
Some brief stretching while waiting in bathroom line.
