Pre-race routine:

We stayed in a cabin the night before. Somehow, both kids ended up in bed with me. I didn't sleep well, and my right hip was feeling uncomfortable. We got up early and had breakfast in the cafeteria. It was scrambled eggs and toast. Not what I would normally eat, but actually it was good. I didn't get my usual stomach cramps during the run.
Event warmup:

I jogged for about 5 minutes about 20 minutes before the race. I waffled on whether I should wear a wetsuit or not. Finally, I put it on and got in the water. The water wasn't cold, but the wetsuit gives me a little more confidence.
Swim
  • 19m 20s
  • 875 yards
  • 02m 13s / 100 yards
Comments:

It was an average swim for me, but I only beat 4 people out of the water. I am just so slow. A woman doing breast stroke was keeping pace with me for a while. The swim is bittersweet for me - I am so happy to be done with it, but depressing to be so far back.
What would you do differently?:

where do I begin?
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

No data yet, it was a fairly long run up a paved road to the transition area. I felt good about my transition.

Final results don't give transition data - I don't know which legs got the t. time. I think swim time included transition, but not sure.
Bike
  • 1h 34m 25s
  • 12 miles
  • 7.63 mile/hr
Comments:

For my age category, I passed one woman in first lap, and picked up the second woman on the second lap. I passed a lot of people especially on the technical stuff. I surprised at how non-technical the riders were. Many appeared to have no mtb experience. I really liked this ride!

When I passed the second woman, we walked together through some mud holes. We chatted - she was very nice. She had lots of road experience but only 6-weeks of mtb experience. I was nervous that she would pick me up again on the non-technical stuff, so I pushed harder on the non-technical stuff on the second lap. I bet my 2nd lap was better than my first lap.

Overall, my bike speed still puts me back of the pack. I enjoyed the ride!
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

No data, but I am satisifed with transition.
Run
  • 36m 29s
  • 3 miles
  • 12m 10s  min/mile
Comments:

I should have carried water - I thought the 3 feed stations would be enough. But it was all gatorade - too sweet for me. I should have carried water.

My initial goal was to do 10 minute miles, but I was wiped from the bike ride. So I amended to 12-minute miles, and then I just wanted to run it all. If I started walking, I didn't think I would be able to start running again! I felt dead for the first mile, but then I improved to plain ol' exhausted...

When I look at the final results, I actually gained on my closest competitors with my run performance. I guess they were feeling exhausted too!
I didn't pass anyone nor was I passed on the run. In fact, I never saw anyone else on the run. There was one pocket of LOUD cheerers. They were helpful because I could judge how close people were ahead or behind me. No one was close to me.
What would you do differently?:

More technical offroad training.
Post race
Warm down:

No time to relax - I had to round up my kids.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

same old issues - weight, swim skills, battling the mental demons.

Event comments:

This was a very fun race - I highly recommend it! It is a great destination race. We rented a cabin - I recommend that too! The kids triathlon was fun - my daughter won!
