Pre-race routine:

I actually slept pre race last night! Got up around 0500 had a muffin with coffee while I let John and the girls sleep in. Hit McDonalds for breakfast (sausage-egg biscuit only I tossed the biscuit) Got to the site pretty early so I had plenty of time to set up my transition area, get marked up, pick up the timing chip. Said hi to the gang I worked with yesterday in the med tent
Event warmup:

Didn't do much to warm up, some stretching, jogged down to the swim start area Met a bunch of fellow BT'ers pre swim (jusTry'n was hanging out as this was a ladies race, sk2a2005 raced with me and showed me the whole dolphin dive thing)
Swim
  • 13m 6s
  • 547 yards
  • 02m 24s / 100 yards
Comments:

warned everyone to watch the rocks coming out of the water since I saw many cut feet from that yesterday-so what did I do? You guessed it, cut my foot on a rock. I had such a crummy swim at my last OW race that I was happy to swim this one without hugging the lines/kayaks. YEAH!!! I beat my time from Thursdays practice set!
What would you do differently?:

I need to get my brain past the need to backstroke in a race, I KNOW I can swim 500m nonstop. More OWS practice would be helpful
Transition 1
  • 05m 42s
Comments:

long run (1/4-1/2 mile) up from river to TA)Big hill with gravel didn't help. Tried to keep the dirt out of my foot so I could keep going without a trip to the med tent
What would you do differently?:

leave flip flops on the edge for the run up to TA?
Bike
  • 38m 20s
  • 10 miles
  • 15.65 mile/hr
Comments:

Had a hard time clipping in at the mount line then the water bottle was sliding out since I used a different bottle and the cage is bigger. Started out feeling pretty good, got passed a few times by women from the swim wave behind me so I kicked it up and started passing ladies. Not sure how many in all, I think around 10 at most. I've done some speed work in the neighborhood in the past few weeks and it has helped a lot. Couldn't get the damn flip lid to stay open for me to drink enough, only got one good gulp of water the whole 10 miles!
What would you do differently?:

remember my usual water bottle and not use the flip lid bottles!
Transition 2
  • 02m 2s
Comments:

my cut toe made it hard to change shoes-plus I was trying so hard to not lose time in T2 that my heel on the other foot didn't set right in the shoe (yeah, worked up a blister by the halfway point of the run-more on that later) Took part of a gel and water on the way through the run start
What would you do differently?:

make sure the feet set right in the shoes so I'm not hurting on the run
Run
  • 20m 51s
  • 2 miles
  • 10m 25s  min/mile
Comments:

Kids ran in with me the last 100 yards-one on each hand. John's picture cut Rachel out, hope the race pic looks better Their running in with me made the race a lot more fun
What would you do differently?:

need to pick up my pace, I'm sure, Shouldn't buy shoes and run only twice in them before a race-especially since I'd not done sockless in these to see how they'd feel.
Post race
Warm down:

walked around, checked in with my new BT buddies. Took care of the feet. Had some water and gatorade with a cup of chex mix and wedge of banana/orange

What limited your ability to perform faster:

the cut on my left foot and the blister I created on the right foot hampered me a bit on my run.

not enough brick sessions

Event comments:

my best race this season-most relaxed about it and had the most fun at this one. I wish John could enjoy these events as a spectator and post race party-he always just wants to take off. It was a long ride home in my sweaty/wet bathing suit and bike shorts

Performance: Good

Course: 500 meter rectangular course. They said we could dolphin dive or walk to the first yellow bouy (100 yds) but there'd be a DQ if we walked the long side (300 yds) Other than getting a bit congested in spots it was an easy swim. I backstroked a couple times (less than 50 yds each) for the head more than the need.

Course: out and back paved rock. Worked up a good blister on my heel cause my shoe didn't go on right, had to stop just after the turn around to fix my shoe so I could make the run back Took in some water and the rest of the gel at the turn around. Need to start doing inervals/farklets to pick up speed. Need more bricks, too so I can get more used to riding hard and running hard immediately following
