Run
Comments: This was my first 50 mile ultra and I had a great time. The race was very well organized and there was plenty of aid. I did have GI problems for about the first 15 miles and I was trying to run very conservatively. I got lost once when a bunch of horse riders were blocking the main trail and I could not see it so turned off onto a side trail and went maybe a quarter mile down the trail until I realized that I no longer saw any shoe prints. I was feeling great at mile 39 but then took a fall and didn't feel so hot after that and then between miles 40 and 42 I had a huge energy slump. I was able to start picking back up about mile 43 and finished well. It was an amazing experience. What would you do differently?: Watch my diet in the days before the race and run a little more aggressively. Post race
Warm down: I went and stood in a cold pond for a bit to try and cool my legs and reduce swelling. Then I wnet and got lots of food, went to the hotel room and layed around. What limited your ability to perform faster: GI problems, getting lost and just the conservative running of a first timer. Event comments: I discovered that my feet swell too much to be contained even by my large 12 EE marathon shoes so I went out and bought a gargantuan 13 EE pair of shoes. Got up early and ate three packets of oatmeal and a power bar and started hydrating. Drove down to the race, running late, and got there in the nick of time.
No real warm up for an ultra I guess. You start at a slow jog and never really move much beyond that.
