Pre-race routine:

woke up and piled in the car w/ family to head to the race. wasn't very hungry so i only had a granola bar and then a pre race gu.

Comments:

mass start with all triathletes. i love that. it was pretty open and i found myself swimming right next to k for almost the entire swim. at one point i started to cut towards shore a little and she punched me in the face! pretty much my fault and apparently i whacked her once too so we're even.
she beat me out of the water and then i passed her on the run up the beach.

nothing. water temp was awesome. great swim.

my goal was over 20mph. that seemed pretty easy at first but i was afraid to push it too much early. in retrospect, it was a really fast course and although i pushed the 3rd loop, i probably should have gone harder on the first two loops.

not sure if it was the wind or pacing, or the mileage being off, but i had very inconsistent mile splits.
there were packs of people so i had to really focus on going hard instead of just picking people off 1 by 1.
What would you do differently?:

Post race
Warm down:

met family and cheered on the other finishers. went to grab some food and stayed for the awards. winning female apparently broke into tears when she hit the finish line. pretty cool.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

early season race and not being on an official plan all winter. i hoped to break 1:09, but the time was good enough to place in any of the age groups so i'll certainly take it.
i should have gone harder on the bike though. i need to stop worrying about the run and try to blow up on the bike at these short distances.

Event comments:

very good race. small, but very well run and great conditions. it had a few issues when we did it several years ago (transition area, bathrooms, etc.), but they fixed all of the problems and put on a great race.
