Swim
Comments: This was my first open water swim, so I spent the first quarter of it trying to figure out how to sight and not go off course. After that I found a rhythm and the rest of it went pretty well. What would you do differently?: I could have benefitted from a practice swim. Transition 1
Comments: Lots of water came out when I took the wetsuit off. I dried my feet off with my towel and my socks and shoes went on easily. What would you do differently?: Get better at taking off my wetsuit quickly. Bike
Comments: I had my bike shifting nicely before I transported it to the race, but for some reason my rear derailleur wasn't letting me use my lowest gear, which really sucked on the steep hill right before the turnaround. Then my chain fell off twice while I was shifting on the way down. What would you do differently?: Verify that my bike is working properly after taking it out of my car. Transition 2
What would you do differently?: Nothing that I can think of. Run
Comments: The course was difficult, some of the trails were very steep, narrow, and rocky. The course was not very well marked in some places, and I had to ask for directions a few times. Also, there was no water station until well after the mile 2 marker (which was the only marker I saw). What would you do differently?: Drink more water. Post race
Warm down: Had a slice of pizza, drank fluids, sat around. What limited your ability to perform faster: I really underestimated the difficulty of this particular race, and I should have consumed some calories other than the gatorade I had on the bike. Event comments: I'm sure I'll do better next year! Last updated: 2008-03-10 12:00 AM

I spent the evening before getting my stuff together and working on my bike. At about 10:15 I realized that my goggles were still in my locker at the Y, so I rushed over and got them about 30 seconds before closing time. So then I got about 5.5 hours of sleep, met my friend who was coming to watch me, got coffee, and went to the lake. Checked in, set up my transition area, had a clif bar, waited. Found out my wave was last, waited some more.
Ran back and forth setting up my stuff and trying to figure out where body marking was and why I didn't have a blue wristband like many others did.
