Overall Rank = 49/77
Age Group = M 40-44
Age Group Rank = 7/14
Pre-race routine:

got up and ate some oatmeal and started hydrating about 3 hours before the race.
Event warmup:

No real warm-up just hung out in transition.
Swim
  • 38m 1s
  • 1931 meters
  • 01m 58s / 100 meters
Comments:

I was swimming nice and straight heading out and then started swimming crooked a bit on the way back but it was a decent swim.
What would you do differently?:

need to continue to work on my navagation skills.
Transition 1
  • 06m
Comments:

This race has an amazingly long transition plus I didn't push it too much.
Bike
  • 3h 15m 57s
  • 56 miles
  • 17.15 mile/hr
Comments:

They didn't have a Clyde division so I was going head to head with the age groupers. I still really like the Lake Mead rides because they are so challenging.
What would you do differently?:

I think I may have needed to drink less or maybe it was just what I drank in transition I don't know but I had serious stomach problems on the run.
Transition 2
  • 05m
Comments:

another long transition but I really tired not to hurry through. Drank a Red Bull in T2 and that may have been a mistake though I had done it successfully in training and prior races.
What would you do differently?:

Probably avoid carbonated beverages from now on. I think I've been lucky not having problems in the past.
Run
  • 2h 33m 25s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 11m 43s  min/mile
Comments:

I began to overheat at the end and I was having bad stomach problems throughout. I felt bloated and was having stomach cramps. Also, quite stupidly, I didn't use any body glide or anything and I got so chafed between my legs that they were bleeding. The elastic on my tri shorts were just chewing into raw meat and it sucked mightly. Strategically I had an excellent run but I made some stupid mistakes that made me pay.
What would you do differently?:

Make certain that I remember to bring my brain on race day.
Post race
Warm down:

I headed straight to the lake and soaked in the cold water for maybe 20 minutes, as long as I could stand.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nutrition and chaffing mostly.

Event comments:

This was their first year doing a half and it needs work for sure but it was a decent race with an race director who really cares about making the race better. This is the toughest half-iron I have done but I wouldn't want them to change it. I think I could do better given better decision making but probably couldn't cut more than maybe a half-hour off my time.

Course: Hard. This course was mostly on dirt and sand roads and really there was a lot of the course that was pretty easy and flat but there is a section that is about a mile and a half that is basically a sandy wash that you run uphill the whole way. The longest section of the run is a dirt road that runs high above and alongside Lake Mead and it is basically flat. the day really starts heating up which also takes a lot out of you. Around mile 10 or so you face a long uphill run, maybe a mile or so, that is at least on pavement. There is a final mile that is straight and flat and hot and you are basically staring at the finish line the whole time.
