Pre-race routine:

I did this race 2 weeks after IMLP as my extended family attends and my brother, son Kyle and daughter Emily like to do it as a family event. I had no illusions that I would do well or feel great as my runs have felt pretty horrible post IMLP and I can tell I'm still recovering. But for my family I did the race.
Event warmup:

Up at 5:30, out of the hotel at 6am
ate English Muffin with PB,and granola bar

At 8:10 rode about 10' with some pick ups to help get my body ready to race; on with wetsuit with about 5' to spare and did a short swim warm up.

Comments:

First time in awhile started in 2nd row figured with lots of newbies wanted to get out in front of them. Total mess with very slow swimmers in front..it was worse than IM swim. Everyone goes then stops, elbows, arms, legs flying everywhere. I found it quite amusing..why did you start in front if you can't swim?

After first buoy found someone to draft off for awhile. Lots of breast stroking wild kicking women. What is up with this crazy Minnesota women? After rounding last buoy swam toward white boat house but was blocked by women swimming zig zag over and over in front of me blocking me..finally made it around her. Ended up way to far to the right and over swam stupid me as I missed the swim exit.

It was fun to be the pike in Pike Lake....Kevin and Shasha have gotten quiet creative with my racing swim caps..now get pictures and no longer Pike I'm Iron Pike now.

13 seconds faster than '06 when I had my wetsuit zipper undone by one of these whacky MN women..dangerous lot and very physical (I was born here).
What would you do differently?:

Learn to swim faster..will work on it this winter. Not give space when folks bump up against me over and over.

Transition 1
  • 01m 48s
Comments:

Pretty good T1, flipped my pike decorated swim cap so doubled back for it.

Lots of folks in T1 and hard to get around those walking their bikes but I managed.
What would you do differently?:

Not much; exact same time as '06
Bike
  • 32m 6s
  • 10.3 miles
  • 19.25 mile/hr
Comments:

Pushed hard from the get go..passed lots and lots of people including folks 3-4 waves ahead of me. Not one person passed me but I was in 2nd to last wave, and slowish swimmer. I was passing folks the whole time so mostly rode in the middle of the road as there were a constant line of victims to pass. It was fun, but my legs were hurting, I was breathing hard, and just did the best I could with how my legs were feeling.

First time ever I thought of not finishing the race as I felt I didn't have much in the tank to run and since IMLP my runs have been awful and my legs didn't have much in them.

Last fast downhill I wanted to pass this guy but he swerved out wide left seeing me to make right hand turn. I said a few things to him when I was able to pass him..I hate giving away free speed by having to brake..argh. I see my family cheering me on just before T2..sweet!

Finished feeling like I did my best.
What would you do differently?:

Not race on fatigued legs..did the best I could today.

My avg power was 165 when normal it would be 20-25 watts higher..wonder what that would mean for speed..maybe 1 mph faster?
Transition 2
  • 02m 54s
Comments:

Like getting back to T2 with mostly empty rack just like when I left T1. I had a hard time getting my socks on without wrinkles.
What would you do differently?:

'06 2:26, so stuck socks slowed me down
Run
  • 24m 19s
  • 2.6 miles
  • 09m 21s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt crappy when I started running..not surprised. Then my breathing got worse and I started my asthma type wheezing. I walked and did my inhaler. My initial thought was 2.6 miles piece of cake I can suck it up...at the end of the up hill I was not feeling that way..saw my brother and figured he was about a mile or little less in front of me.

On the flat part of the course, I seemed to find my groove more. Turn around and back by the water station guys who made me laugh, I felt pretty good. Ran the down hill trying to keep picking up the pace..not sure if I did or not, saw Emily coming up the hill so we high 5ed, then Kyle was walking, kept going towards finish and saw Kevin and Shasha about 150 yds from finish picked it up a bit. Tried to catch a couple folks I'd been passing back and forth, but had no more in the tank..finished wheezing very loudly and took 2-3 minutes to get breath back. Check time and figured I beat my time from 2 years ago which surprised me as I felt I was slower and thought I'd be 3-5' slower than in '06.

What would you do differently?:

I was happy with my pace given how poorly I felt. Run turn around was farther than in '06 and I was 36 seconds faster..

Not race 2 weeks after Ironman...but for my family I did it..not much physical activity type events my extended family comes together to do. I started and motivated all my family to do tris so I feel good that we can do this..fatigued or not..it is very cool.
Post race
Warm down:

Got breathing under control, walked out to Kevin and Shasha so I could cheer on Emily and Kyle finish. Emily was 3' faster on swim and a bit faster on bike but slower run, faster over all. Kyle with zero training was 3 minutes slower than '06..youth...

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Ironman 2 weeks before, asthma, poor swim skill.
If only I could run and swim as well as I'd bike I'd be good.

Event comments:

Nice local race with many new triathletes. Expensive race fee for the location.
