Age Group Rank = 35/42
Pre-race routine:

Woke up had some toast with PB and jam, packed everything up and got down to race. Set up transition, got on wetsuit and it was time to race.
Event warmup:

Swam a few meters in the lake.
Swim
  • 33m 48s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 15s / 100 meters
Comments:

I pretty much tried to take it easy in the swim since i was sick. I picked up the pace in the last 250m. I stayed with one girl for most of the race.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, this went fairly well. I could have swam a bit harder if I wasn't sick with a cold, but overall I think it went just fine.
Transition 1
  • 02m
Comments:

T1 is included in the bike time, but I did look at my watch and I think it was about 2 minutes in transition. It would have been a few seconds faster if I didn't wear socks, but my feet have been freezing without them.
What would you do differently?:

I think it went okay
Bike
  • 1h 31m 49s
  • 39 kms
  • 25.48 km/hr
Comments:

I was trying to do better this year than last with the bike course. i think overall my time was comparable, as the course is slightly different. My first lap around I was very cautious around the tight corners, but I became more confident on the rest of the laps. I was slow and steady up the hill - but I didnt' feel like I was going to die on the hill - which is an improvement.
What would you do differently?:

Still need more hill practice, and I need to work on cornering with more speed and confidence.
Transition 2
  • 01m
Comments:

This is an estimated time. Had to walk the bike in... feeling tired When I got my bike back to the rack there wasn't any room - had to push 2 other bikes out of the way from my spot. I wore my lace up runners - due to injury this is the best bet for my foot/ankle. Sprayed on sunscreen, but I really needed to put more sunscreen on.
What would you do differently?:

lace locks would have sped it up by a few seconds.
Run
  • 1h 16m 29s
  • 10 kms
  • 07m 39s  min/km
Comments:

At first I had terrible LLQ cramps, but these went away after about 10minutes. After that though I just felt sick and tired. I did run the first hill and was not too bad until 3/4 of the way around the first lap. AFter that I felt nauseous and I couldn't breathe. I had a few almost panic attacks - resp rate would climb and I couldn't catch my breath. Had to stop and walk. By the second lap around I couldn't even do a 5:1, was down to 1:1 run:walk. And on the second lap the aid station was out of water!! So I felt even more unwell due to dehydration.
What would you do differently?:

I think if I wasn't sick this would have gone much better. Also I needed to drink more on the bike course, and I should definitely take my own water for a 10k and not rely on the aid stations. This was a terrible run... probably one of my worst ever.
Post race
Warm down:

walked a bit then jumped in the lake

What limited your ability to perform faster:

being sick definitely, and not drinking enough on the bike.

Event comments:

I have done this race 3 times now... not sure if I will do it again - I don't like the setup of the run course aid stations, and they ran out of water.
