Pre-race routine:

Up at 5:15 to eat a little and get things together. Made coffee, had bread and butter. Ken picked me up on time and off the race. Arrived with plenty of time to get chipped and set up transition. MEt up with Kam,Jackie,RL,Chad and others. The race started at 7:00. Ken was off at 7:18, I went off at 8:30. So waited and waited. Ate a Pop tart and drank hit the head. Able to see and cheer Ken and RL through T1. Chatted with people in line. Got in.
Event warmup:

Few laps in dive pool.
Swim
  • 05m 18s
  • 300 yards
  • 01m 46s / 100 yards
Comments:

I have never seen so many different strokes and combination of stokes. The pool wasn't to bad with poor swimmers in the first 2-3 lanes. Had a speedy teenager and moderate swimmer in front of me, one speedy possessed tri'er. The lanes were open fo the most part. I never saw the teenager. I passed the moderate swimmer in 2 lanes, passed easily and very calmly. I was passed by the possessed guy, let up a little to let him by. Lane 5 we went four abreast a tight squeeze with a couple mom in motions and another swimmer. Lap six I got in a traffic jam for over half the lap. One slow breast stoker and freestyler I couldn't get around due to traffic other way. When that cleared I took down off then left side and slipped turned and pushed home to the ladder at the other end. Ran well for the 200 yds out building to T1. Ken had come and was already on the run.
What would you do differently?:

Sign up earlier to get a better start time in a group more my speed.
Transition 1

Comments:

Felt good. Didn't wear socks or gloves.
What would you do differently?:

Bring a F---king bucket.
Bike

Comments:

Crosswind, headwind, crosswind, then finally tail wind. passed lots and lots of mtn bikes, couple roadies. Got passed by the couple a guys. Mostly on the hills. Felt good starting out. I pretty much gave everyone I passed some encouragement. Lots of people pedaling their fanny off on mtn bikes. Best of all they for the most part smiling. The outer reaches of the course were poorly manned. Got some nutrition in cliff blocks half way in. Pina colota.
Finally got to turn for home and some tail wind. Come up on a familiar looking bike. It's Granny!! But not Kam. One of her team mates. Sifted though the traffic to bring it home. Hit transition line well.
What would you do differently?:

Lose the freaking weight.
Transition 2
  • 01m 48s
Comments:

Had a good cheering crowd on the way in since everyone was DONE except Kam. Racked the bike on a saw horse. Found the keys for Ken jizze. and got my shoes and socks on. I used some powder to help the socks on. Took my sunglasses off and then put then back on.
What would you do differently?:

Felt good.
Run
  • 30m 48s
  • 3.43 miles
  • 08m 59s  min/mile
Comments:

Started out well. Stride was a good length. Climbing the stair out was good. Passed a bunch of runners in the first mile. Then my legs asked me if we were done yet. They aren't very friendly either. Left calf is cramping some. Should have taken 3 more of the orange pills. Took a short walk 100 feet to get things calm down. Came running to a cheering crowd and one screaming teenager that smoked me in the chute. Good for him but I still beat since he started before me.
What would you do differently?:

I think a little run before the swim may have helped.
Post race
Warm down:

Got a sandwich. Little water and drink. Hung with the gang some.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My weight. Well not that it's my inability to really get serious about it. Like my brother maybe take potato chips.

Event comments:

Fun race, I say now. I was 4:30 faster then the same race two years ago. So I'm pleased. Bike ride felt strong. Run was disappointing until I learned it was like 3.43 miles. Some day I'll enjoy the run. I do on it's own. Missed my goals by seconds again. sub 1:30.
Great to meet Heidi's Mom, Kam's gang, and the rest of BT'ers and Master swimmers.
Glad I decided to do this race at the last minute. Good training for transitions and remaining calm.
